Somehow it seems fitting that Ralph Kiner should have died on Babe Ruth’s birthday. Kiner, one of the great sluggers in baseball history died last Thursday, Feb. 6, at the ripe old age of 91 - the 119th anniversary of Babe Ruth’s birth. Kiner only played 10 years in the major leagues due to constant back issues. Ten years is the minimum allowed for induction into the MLB Hall of Fame. Nevertheless, he earned his way to Cooperstown with 369 home runs and 1,015 RBI. His best years were 1947 and 1949. In ‘47 he hit .313, belted 51 home runs and d...
One of my favorite downtime activities of late is to wander through the basketball section of the NSAA website and scan through that portion labled, "Points Leaders by Class." As the season gets later and later it becomes a more and more interesting occupation. Too bad there isn't a little more down time. Considering the eight Nebraska teams (four girls and four boys teams) in the coverage area of the Sidney Sun-Telegraph, the Class B6 boys race is the most fascinating. There's been a battle...
When the first page of the of the 2014 calendar is torn off to reveal the second, it means the local winter sports scene will be racing towards its dramatic conclusion. With February comes the final regular-season basketball games for all schools in our area, with sub districts and districts to follow quickly thereafter. The wrestling season will end, too, and then it’s on to districts in Cozad. The wrestling state tournament is slated for Feb. 20-23 in Omaha. The Sidney boys and girls bowling teams have already earned their way to state and w...
I confess I’d never heard of Richard Sherman before last Sunday. I wasn’t able to watch a lot of NFL football this season and what I did see was mostly confined to the NFL Red Zone Channel. But last weekend I was excited to watch the Broncos play the Patriots and the Seahawks do battle with the 49ers. My football Sunday was made extra enjoyable when the two teams I wanted to win came through. Despite my New York upbringing and New England roots, I don’t like the Patriots but I appreciate Peyton Manning - and Archie and Eli too. I rooted for t...
I hope there’s snow, freezing rain, hail storms, record low temperatures and the first ever monsoon to hit the east coast of the United States on Feb. 2. I hope the islands of Manhattan, Staten, Long, Bedloe’s and all the rest of them float out to sea for several hours on that day leaving everyone high and wet in East Rutherford, New Jersey. I don’t like the idea that they’re going to hold the Super Bowl in a cold-weather city in an outdoor Stadium. Feb. 2, of course is the date of the 2014 Super Bowl. I know it’s not called the 2014 Super Bow...
While researching a story on the 1951 Panhandle B Conference Champion Sidney Maroons football team, I came across a Sidney Telegraph article of that year listing all the previous champions. The first teams listed were “O.J. Weymouth’s teams in 1926 and 1927.” I have since come to discover that the Scottsbluff Bearcats were the Western Conference Champions of 1926. Not the Sidney Maroons. The 1927 team, however, was a champion of the Western Conference and shared the title with Gering. I can’t say what happened in the intervening 25 years b...
Hopefully by now the effects of tryptofan, heavy gravy and overspending have worn off and we can all get back to some sports. Most of all I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday and Happy New Year. As for sports, the holiday period is somewhat extended by the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout, which begins Thursday afternoon. The venues are Cabela’s Athletic Facility and the Sidney Middle School gym. Sixteen teams, including eight boys and girls teams, will compete. The host teams take center stage at the High School Thursday night. The...
Grover Cleveland Alexander was born, raised and died in Nebraska. If you’re a baseball fan with just a rudimentary knowledge of the game’s history you’ve heard of Alexander. For some reason he was called “Ol Pete” in his day though nobody really knows why. Even when describing his exploits on the mound the Sidney Telegraph stories would refer to him occcassionally as Pete in one form or another. He was on the hill for three games of the 1926 World Series between the New York Yankess and the St. Louis Cardinals. The ‘26 series was one of the mor...
My father was always very opinionated about NFL coaches and sports broadcasters. I don’t know whether it’s becasue of him or not, but I find I’m pretty much the same way. Or maybe every sports fan is that way. Fans around here are blessed with seasoned broadcasters. Of course, I am usually sharing the same space with the KSID team. I never get the opportunity to hear them over the air--and let’s face it, the microphone and the radio lend an appealing sound to the voices that call each game. Some people just prefer one voice over another...
There’s a great new invention - at least new to me - for NFL fans. It’s been around a few years but this is the first season I’ve had access. As a Miami Dolphins fan, about 2,000 miles away from the stadium formerly known as Joe Robbie, I don’t get to see many Fish games. I don’t have the NFL package and never have. For years I’ve been relegated to watching whatever my local Fox or CBS station decides to show me. Until now. Until I discovered the NFL Red Zone Channel. I’d heard of the Red Zone but didn’t have it and never quite knew what it wa...
When I was a little boy I spent as much time outdoors as I could. I was the type of kid who often came home with scraped knees and dirty clothes. But sometimes it rained and I needed something to occupy my time. Last week I took possession of something I haven’t owned in a decade or more. There was a time when I would purchase one annually. I even used to add one to my Christmas list as a young boy. Since it’s relatively inexpensive, it was one of the things on the list I actually got. Perhaps its because of the Internet that I got out of the...
With the Leyton Warriors exit from the state volleyball tournament yesterday morning, the fall sports season for the Sun-Telegraph is now officially over. Now it's on to basketball and wrestling, and good luck to all. There was some exciting playoff action for many of the teams in our area. That the Warriors volleyball team was the last one standing is not a great surprise. It was the third year in a row and the fifth time in the last six years the Warriors have made the big dance. Congrats to...
