DALTON--It was a bright and sunny Friday afternoon for the opening of Homecoming Weekend for Leyton, and another homecoming of sorts was on the schedule for the weekend's festivities. It was the return of Potter-Dix Coyotes on the Leyton Football schedule, for the first time since 2015. The rival schools had bright sunshine for the revival of their rivalry, and the heat of the sun Friday afternoon was matched by the intensity on the field. A 6-Man Football game can have teams coming back from...
DALTON--There were some questions about the Leyton Lady Warrior Volleyball team coming into the 2024 season with the loss of some of their big hitters from last year due to graduation. But the Leyton squad made adjustments and have been using their speed, court-coverage, and solid fundamentals to tear through the regular season schedule as they head into October. On this undefeated streak, the Lady Warriors have only dropped two sets in 19 matches, and are clearly the area's dominant team in...
SIDNEY--"Be that team! Be that team!" shouted Sidney Head Coach Ryan Smith from the sidelines mid-way through the second quarter of Friday night's contest between Sidney and Mitchell. There's no doubt about it, as the Red Raiders are "that team" after thoroughly dismantling the Mitchell Tigers 42-to-0 Friday night at Weymouth Field. It was the Raiders' second 42-to-0 win in a row, and the Sidney boys have firmly established themselves as the class of C1. At 4-and-0, the undefeated Raiders...
HARRISON--Potter-Dix's Coyote Football team rebounded from a loss against Hay Springs on September 13 with a big win over Sioux County on Friday, September 20. The Coyotes used the week following the loss to refocus, and it paid off. A strong opening quarter by the Coyotes was the difference in the matchup against the Warriors. The Coyotes were able to outscore the Warriors 30-to-20 in the first quarter, and that proved to be enough of an advantage to hold off the Sioux County team. The...
SIDNEY-- Sidney's Lady Raider Volleyball team had an uneven start to their season, with an opening match straight-set loss to Sterling followed shortly by a loss to Ogallala. After improving their record to 3-and-2 with a win against Mitchell on September 10, the Lady Raiders did have a tournament loss to Gothenburg, but then recovered to earn two more wins in the same tournament against Cozad and Ainsworth. The Lady Raiders kept the momentum going with wins against Chadron and Bridgeport on...
CRAWFORD--Leyton's Warrior football team earned their second win in three tries in their inaugural season playing 6-man football, and this win was fueled by four touchdown passes by their outstanding junior quarterback Alec Watchorn. The game was a tight battle as Crawford was able to respond to Leyton's scores with touchdowns of their own, but the swarming Warrior defense, led by the 15 total tackles of junior Jeremiah Hajek, held off the Rams and secured the win for Leyton. Watchorn completed...
CHAPPELL--It was Thursday Night Football under the lights last week in Chappell, but a powerful Hay Springs Hawks team swooped into town and spoiled the fun for the Creek Valley faithful. The young Storm team gave it their all but were overpowered by the Hawks early in the game, and the Storm could not recover and lost the lopsided contest 81-to-6. Hay Springs started immediately and scored on their initial drive. They ended the game scoring on all of their 11 possessions. Most of the damage...
POTTER--After a middling start to the season where the Lady Coyotes won two matches and lost three, the team is starting to gel, and although they're still looking to get above the .500 mark. Play has improved and the team has battled hard in every match. The girls competed on September 12 in a triangular tournament against host Kimball and Mitchell, the Lady Coyotes were able to defeat the Lady Longhorns, 2-to-1. After taking the first set 25-to-17, Kimball battled back and forced extra points...
SIDNEY-- The Holdrege Dusters made the long journey to Sidney Friday and were rudely greeted by a fired-up Red Raider team that quickly put a stop to any thoughts of the Holdrege team making the long journey back home with a victory under their belt. The Raiders piled up 211 rushing yards and 216 passing yards while holding the Dusters to just 94 rushing yards and 50 passing yards in a dominant performance that should put all other C1 teams on notice that this Sidney team is a force on both...
POTTER--Lately, there's been a rivalry between the Hay Springs Hawks and the Potter-Dix Coyotes, but the Coyotes have been the team that has had the edge in the contests. But that trend came to a screeching halt last Friday, as the Hawks descended upon Combs Field in Potter and clawed up the Coyotes, 88-to-53. The final score does not indicate how one-sided the game was, as the Coyotes were able to tack on some points late in a game that was pretty much decided by the end of the first quarter....
GERING--It was a beautiful day to hit the links, and the Sidney Lady Raider golf team hit 'em well on Monday, September 16, with both JV and Varsity teams earning third place in the competitive Invitational. Jordan DeNovellis led the Lady Raider team with a round of 92 to earn her seventh place individually. Claire Jordan did not have her best day, but still shot a 96, good enough for 11th place overall. She was followed in 12th place by Josette McConnell with a round of 97, and Aubrey Campbell...
CRAWFORD--Leyton's Warrior Football team has adapted well to their move to 6-Man Football, racking up another win early in the season with a 60-to-42 win over Crawford. Junior Alec Watchorn tossed four touchdown passes and rushed for 51 yards as the Warriors offense clicked and racked up 367 yards on the ground and through the air. Freshman Colt Van Anne rushed 11 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns, junior Jeremiah Hajek rushed three times for 34 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore Isaac...
Sidney's Red Raider Cross Country team has had a solid first month of competition, traveling to Scottsbluff, Cozad, and Chadron while the runners improve their individual times, allowing the team to improve in the standings. In their latest outing, Sidney traveled to Chadron for the High School/Middle School Meet on Friday, September 13. The boys team placed sixth overall with 111 points. Sophomore Jonah Graham led the boys with a 21st place finish at 19:51.91. Senior Noah Canas placed 29th...
WELDONA, CO.-- Peetz's Bulldog Football team bounced-back from a loss to Caliche last week with a big win over Weldon Valley, 75-to-26. Led by by sophomore Conner Schumacher's 130 rushing yards and two touchdowns, the Bulldogs rushed for 264 yards and passed for 131 yards in a contest they needed to win. Sophomore Dylan Wagner rushed nine times for 93 yards and two touchdowns while Schumacher caught three passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns and led the defense with 17 total tackles....
WALLACE--Creek Valley's Storm Football team had a tough go last season, so their opening-day win against Minatare was a great way to start off the new season. Led by the running attack featuring juniors Zander Polk, Michael Prince Dugan, and sophomore Feenix Higginbotham, the Storm ran up 355 yards in their 48to-6 victory over the Indians. But in their next contest on September 6, the Storm made the long trip to Wallace only to get humbled by the Wildcats 81-to-6. Wallace scored early and often...
MINDEN NE--Last week the Red Raiders opened the season with a dominant, if not workman-like, performance in their victory over the Cozad Haymakers at Weymouth Field. In their follow-up performance, Sidney traveled three hours and took away a victory with big plays and aggressive defense. The team is proving to be very capable on both sides of the line with a well-balanced offense that makes big plays, and a defense that hits hard, gets to the ball quickly, and gets off the field. Friday night's...
SIDNEY--Sidney's Lady Raider Volleyball team rebounded after an opening-night match against Sterling which saw the Sidney girls fall in straight sets, 3-to-0. Sidney then hosted Yuma on September 3, then hosted Ogallala and Brush for a triangular on September 5. Sidney's match against Yuma started with the teams trading points the whole way in the first set until Sidney gained an edge and took the first set, 25-to-23. Yuma came back in the second set with a win, 25-to-21, but then Sidney took...
SIDNEY-- With three finishers in the Top Ten, the Sidney Lady Raider Golf team had an excellent start to the season on Tuesday, August 27 at the Sidney Invitational at Hillside Golf Club in Sidney. The Junior Varsity squad also finished first, with four Top Ten finishers, and Cali Haas taking first place overall. Overall conditions on the course were great, and the weather was ideal for the day, with bright sunshine and a gentle cool breeze. At the end of the day's round, Scottsbluff's Addie Pec...
HARRISON-- The Sioux County Warriors were able to build up an early lead against the Leyton Warriors on Friday, then held on to take the 46-to-31 victory. Leyton played well, scoring in every quarter, but the 20 points in the first quarter and 18 points in the second Sioux County put up were too much for the Warriors to overcome. Sophomore Austin Beutler excelled throwing the ball, passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. The Warriors next travel to Crawford on Friday to take on...
ILIFF, CO.-- The Peetz Bulldogs looked to rebound from an opening-day loss to Potter-Dix, but the Caliche Buffaloes running game was too much for the Bulldogs to handle. Caliche gained an early lead and was able to maintain their advantage and ended up with the victory, 46-to-38. Caliche started the game with the ball, and used five straight running plays to march down the field and take a 7-to-0 lead. Caliche then recovered an onside kick to get the ball again. The Buffaloes drove the ball agai...

SIDNEY--Coming into the 2024 season, there were plenty of questions surrounding the Sidney Red Raider Football team. Success will do that, as last year's team had an outstanding season and qualified for the State Tournament. How would this year's team perform without last year's standouts? Graduated seniors Isak Doty, Luke Holly, McGuire Rolls, and others were the keys to the Raider's outstanding success last year. Many of these questions were answered Friday night with a dominant performance in...
PEETZ--The Potter-Dix Coyotes and Peetz Bulldogs kicked off the 2024 season with an opening-day matchup in Peetz on Thursday, August 29. The two teams are powerhouses in their respective leagues, and the matchup proved to be an exciting contest, with Potter-Dix coming out on top, 62-to-43. Peetz received the opening kickoff but had difficulty getting anything going on offense. They were forced to punt on fourth down, but a bad snap prevented a punt, and Potter-Dix took over for their first posse...
SIDNEY--The Lady Raiders lost a few key members of their 2023 team that finished 18-and-15, and it looks like there will be a learning curve as Sidney re-tools the Volleyball team for this season. Although the Lady Raiders will have to do without standouts like Karsyn Leeling, Chloe Ahrens, and Payton Schrotberger, Sidney still has a strong team that should be very competitive. Unfortunately, Sidney had to host one of the best teams in the region in its home opener on August 29, which exposed...
FLEMING, COLO.--Leyton's Warrior Football team traveled to Fleming Friday night for their first excursion into the world of 6-Man Football, and if their performance Friday night is any indicator, it looks like the Warriors will have no trouble adapting to the free-wheeling and open style of the 6-man game. The Warriors opened strong, piling up 22 points in the opening quarter while shutting down the Wildcat offense. The Warriors added 10 more points in the second quarter to take a 32-to-0 lead...
