Luck is the residue of design, they say. Might it also be the residue of frightening and confusing foreign adversaries? Donald Trump's relatively crisis-free presidency in foreign affairs has created a sense, perhaps an accurate one, that he cowed enemies into not challenging the U.S. As Sen. Tom Cotton has pointed out, Kabul didn't collapse on Trump's watch, Russia didn't invade Ukraine and Hamas didn't launch a historic terror attack on Israel. Now this may have just been good fortune. Four... Full story
"Mordecai answered Esther, 'Do not think that you will escape [death] in the king's palace any more than [your people], for if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for [your nation] from another place, but you and your house will perish. Yet, who knows whether you have come to [be queen] for such a time as this?'" Esther 4:13, 14 Look at these Scriptures in the light of the election season which has, already, begun. Who are you? Who are 'your people'?... Full story
There is a troubling trend in various schools around the nation that has become an open sore in the past few years. More and more schools are minimizing the teaching of history and American government in order to focus on things that will make our youth “more prepared to join the nation’s work force.” At least that is the excuse. Granted, that preparation is important, but it should not be to the exclusion of other areas of a general education. A vital part of our nation’s education system... Full story

I have long tried to warn the public about the politicization of COVID-19, especially in regards to preventative measures. Now a new study by the Correlation Research in the Public Interest links COVID-19 vaccinations to some 17 million deaths worldwide. The new study examined 17 equatorial and Southern Hemisphere countries including Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Malaysia, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, The Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Suriname,... No matter how much we’d like to believe in the inevitably of human progress and the spread of enlightened norms, we’ve learned the past couple of years that we still need artillery shells -- lots of artillery shells. The Hamas terror attack, together with the ongoing Ukraine war and the looming Chinese threat to Taiwan, is putting a spotlight on the pitiful state of our capacity to manufacture the weapons necessary to the defense of our allies and ourselves. According to a CNN report, an Isr... Full story
Jesus called the Pharisees on their religious practices, "Woe to you, for you tithe [every tenth leaf] of mint, anise and cumin, but have neglected the weightier things of the law: justice, mercy and faithfulness. This you should have done without leaving the other (tithing) undone." Matthew 23:23 Sin misses a mark. Archers stand off several yards and aim at a 'bull's eye'. One who gathers arrows shouts to the archer where the arrow lands. If it did not hit the center of the target, he calls... Full story
What is the good that comes from knowing even a little about the ancient Greeks' religion? I prefer to learn of actual people who once lived in a historical setting, a time and a place. Greek mythology, instead, is a collection of make-believe fantasy stories I would like to know more of, but I find it hard to gain much traction from them, practical use. I wonder. Mark Twain disparaged the whole notion. "Classics," he said, "are the books that everybody wants to claim to have read, but nobody... Full story
One of the questions I get asked a lot about these days concerns how the Legislature plans on changing the rules for next session. The Unicameral Legislature is a self-governing body, and I am the current chair of the Legislature's Rules Committee. That means that any proposed rule changes for next year have to go through me first. So, it is natural that people would want to ask me about rule changes for next year. What sparks this question by so many people today relates to what happened in... Full story
It doesn't take long to read or listen to anti-Israel advocacy before the word "colonial" or "colonialism" is hurled at the Jewish state. After the spasm of Hamas murder, rape, and kidnapping over the weekend, the U.S. Palestinian Community Network exclaimed, "Our people are waging an anti-colonial, anti-occupation, and anti-Zionist liberation struggle!" According to an anti-Israel statement signed by dozens of student groups at Harvard, Israel is undertaking "colonial retaliation." An academic... Full story
"You shall remember the Lord your God for it is He Who gives your hands the power to get wealth that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob)." You may notice a Certificate of Deposit blesses with interest until the CD matures. Cashing in early, has a charge. When we believe on Jesus that covenant gives us tither's rights in I... Full story
Every day we are inundated with bad news. Turn on your TV or radio to any station that carries national and world news – its there. KUDOS to the Sun-Telegraph for publishing the excellent article entitled: “EPIC Option Town Hall Held at Lazy S Ranch”. In this day and age of slanted journalism that is driving an agenda, this article written by Mike Motz utilized the age-old journalism practice of interview – research – validate – and then write an objective article. Facts and figures were accurately quoted. By providing several links to key documents, Sun-Telegraph subscribers were encouraged to do their own research to learn more about benefits of EPIC Option Consumpti... Full story
Monday, October 9th is Columbus Day. It is also Indigenous Peoples Day here in Nebraska. Christopher Columbus was a man of incredible integrity, but revisionists have targeted him in their attempts to rewrite the history of Western civilization with false narratives. Too many people today erroneously believe that Christopher Columbus was a bad person. So, today I would like to expose the revisionism and help restore the good name of Christopher Columbus. On October 9, 2017 Vincent Schilling... Full story
The Matt Gaetz moment is upon us, and unless you enjoy politics as absurdist theater, you might want to skip it. The bomb-throwing Republican congressman from Florida, who has hitherto distinguished himself with sundry attention-getting antics, is making his biggest play yet by trying to remove Kevin McCarthy from the speakership by offering a so-called motion to vacate. McCarthy’s alleged offense is relying on Democratic votes to pass a last-minute spending measure over the weekend to avert a... Full story
“When wisdom enters your heart and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion (judging justly and reasoning rightly with a touch of class) will preserve you. Understanding will keep you and deliver you [from evil] so you may walk in the way of goodness and righteousness.” Proverbs 2:10-20 Fear of torment is not something to manage. It must be refused! Such ‘spiritual warfare’ allows reverence of God to rule. One who imitates God as a dear child is dangerous to the wiles of the devil Ephesia... Full story
Since 2004, radio personality Steve Inskeep has hosted National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition.” During Covid lockdown in 2020, at home with time to spare, Inskeep researched and wrote a book that was published this past week. Inskeep found its title, “Differ We Must: How Lincoln Succeeded in a Divided America,” in a letter that Abraham Lincoln wrote to his good friend Joshua Speed, dated August 24, 1855. Last week, Inskeep explained to Amna Nawaz of PBS News Hour, and Scott Simon of NPR, that... Full story
One of the complaints that I often here about the EPIC Option Consumption Tax has to do with the loss of local control. For example, the League of Municipalities held an informational meeting last week, where they complained about how the EPIC Option Consumption Tax eliminates local control. This was a false assumption. The EPIC Option Consumption Tax does not eliminate local control. The pink postcards we all received recently in the mail were the result of a bill that passed in the... Poor Kamala Harris. The alleged misogyny that is tearing at her vice presidency apparently extends to highly partisan Democratic leaders such as Jamie Raskin and Nancy Pelosi. Both of them caused ripples when their praise for Harris in recent TV interviews was notably cool, as if they were at a high-end fundraising dinner and hated the escargot but had to try to convince the hostess that they really loved it. The Biden campaign reportedly contacted both Raskin and Pelosi. The Maryland... Full story
The Lord said, "Have I not commanded you to be strong and of good courage (very resolute)? Do not be afraid nor be dismayed, I will be with you. Joshua 1:3, 9 Can we just believe that the Lord is with us, wherever we happen to be? EDITOR'S NOTE: Please enjoy this week's Sutherland piece which is a reprint from 10/13/2021. It is just as relevant now as it was then. Sorry folks, I wish I could write numerous articles full of laughter and fun, but I can't. After watching the evening news and comparing the way various news channels handle reporting the same event I usually end up shaking my head in sorrow. One gives a positive spin on everything that is wrong while another spins the good as something bad. The national news... Full story
One of the biggest problems facing states today is empire building. Empire building is the mentality of growing governmental entities without regard for the best interests of the community or the interests of private taxpaying citizens. Many managers of governmental entities and directors of state agencies view their mission in terms of expanding the reach of their organization, and that is not good when it hurts the community or affects the standard of living of their constituency. So, today I... Full story
John Fetterman's Senate legacy is now set -- he's the guy who made it possible to dress like a slob. What the Missouri Compromise was to Henry Clay, what the Second Reply to Hayne was to Daniel Webster, what the Civil Rights Act of 1957 was to Lyndon Johnson, Carhartt sweatshirts and baggy shorts will be to John Fetterman. The Pennsylvania senator is the poster boy -- if self-indulgent sloppiness is your thing -- for the Senate dropping a dress code that required senators to dress in business... Full story
“The feasts of the Lord which you (Moses) shall proclaim to be holy convocations are My Moeds (holy days).” Days of feasting and worship were put in place by God to mystify and confound the enemy so that their wranglings were ignored as the Hebrew people feasted, rejoiced and praised the Lord. Seven such feasts began with Passover and ended with Succoth, each year. The joy of the Lord is STRENGTH that the adversary cannot comprehend. Some people possess a talent to peer deep into the future. In Biblical times people called them prophets. In the Middle Ages, people believed them wizards. Today they are economists who make projections based upon previous business data. Thomas Paine was an unknown writer in Philadelphia, fresh off the boat from England, but he peered deep into the future, more than did others already here. In 1776, in “Common Sense, Paine wrote, “We have it in our power to begin the world over again. A sit... Full story
