The Cheyenne County Ladies Chamber is putting on a Christmas wreath contest open to organizations and individuals. The wreaths will be displayed in windows of businesses throughout downtown Sidney until Dec. 22. The contest will be separated into youth and adult divisions. The youth division will consist of any entries from high school seniors and below. The wreaths will be judged on originality, creativity, construction/durability and overall appearance. From the beginning of time, humans have been concerned with their water supply. The purpose of Nebraska’s Water Funding Task Force, which met in Sidney at the end of last month, is to find long term funding for the state’s water projects to help maintain water sustainability, according to a press release from the group. Blain Schilreff spends much of his day in Sidney, working for Cabela's. But he also serves on the Kimball Community Concert Committee. That's where he got to know Carol Jo Nagel as she became a regular at the concerts. One day, she was not in attendance and it raised questions. Theodore Medina, 23, of Sidney was arrested Saturday for first degree assault, a felony after an altercation between he and a man identified as Ernest Ward. Ward was taken to Sidney Regional Medical Center, where he died Saturday night. The investigation into this matter is ongoing, according to the Cheyenne County attorney's office. The volleyball team at Sidney High School presented a check for over $540 to Brenda Noel, president of the Night of Hope organization on Friday afternoon. The team had a "pink out" for their block out cancer game on Tuesday. The Night of Hope organization funds patient aid and assistance wherever income and insurance end. Sidney residents Jennifer Cartwright and Walter Fischer were arrested last week and charged with possession of methamphetamine, a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. In celebration of the anti-drug campaign Red Ribbon Week, West Elementary students pledged never to try drugs then launched a balloon into the wind. Attached to each balloon is a card and contact information, encouraging the person who finds it to send a message. The first year of the Sidney Police Department's Trunk or Treat event at Hickory Street Square in coordination with Trick or Treating at downtown businesses was a success, said Sidney police chief B.J. When Dale Robertson gets out of prison, he’ll have to start his life over at 50, with nothing to his name but the clothes on his back. After much debate over the storage of asphalt millings at Kielian pit last month, the Sidney planning commission issued a conditional use permit last week to Werner Construction to do work out of the pit. A conditional use permit is needed when a business or individual wants to perform activities on ground that isn’t zoned for those activities, but prefers to avoid the process of re-zoning that ground. Widespread power outages occurred across an area covered by the Wheat Belt Public Power District on Tuesday. The outages extended from the North Platte River south to the Colorado state line between 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. This included the areas of Lodgepole and Chappell. The Onken's spent one Sunday afternoon putting up decorations throughout their yard. Although direct sales and firearms sales were somewhat disappointing, Cabela’s still saw revenue increases in the third quarter of this year. For some area hunters passing on the tradition and giving back to veterans are just as important as bagging a bird.
