    Sidney Wrestling Club treasurer Amanda Sykora was arrested by Cheyenne County Sheriff’s deputies on Oct. 11 for allegedly forging a signature on checks totaling $4506.36 and the theft of club funds. Sykora reportedly admitted to using the club’s bank account to pay personal expenses and forging the name of Chris Raines, a member of the club’s board of directors, without his knowledge.   • City agrees to plan for towing abandoned vehicles

    The city is finally prepared to begin towing abandoned, unlicensed and inoperable vehicles. At Tuesday's meeting, the city council approved a year long contract with Affordable Towing for this purpose—although some council members were perturbed that the council was advised to accept the only bid submitted. The original bid included specifications that the tow company must provide an area to store the vehicles.     On Tuesday evening the city council urged community development director Megan McGown to make sure that there are enough holiday events scheduled to take place at Hickory Street Square to ensure that closing off the block is worthwhile.     Vorachit Luexayachack, a 40-year-old from Iowa, led Nebraska State patrol on a 40 mile chase through Cheyenne and Deuel counties last week ending in his arrest and the discovery of almost 60 pounds of marijuana.   • Cheyenne County corn harvest slowed by weather

    This could be a record year for corn harvest, according to a report from the United States Department of Agriculture. The Nov. 8 report stated that national corn production is up one percent from last month’s forecast and is now predicted at almost 14 billion bushels, which represents a 30 percent increase from last year. If correct, this will mean a record production year for the United States. This would be the highest yield in the U.S since 2009, according to the report.     Last year alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Nebraska reached the highest total in two decades, according to the state’s 2012 annual traffic crash facts report. This was the only statistic in the report that worried Nebraska Office of Highway Safety administrator, Fred Zwonechek. “The alcohol numbers were a bit disturbing,” he said. In 2012, 43 percent of fatal crashes in the state involved alcohol.     A man who exposed at least one child to illegal drugs was sentenced to 20-60 months in prison on Wednesday for methamphetamine possession and 30-60 months for child abuse. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively. On Sept. 6 Justin Warren, 30, of Kimball pled no contest to possession of methamphetamine, a class IV felony and child abuse, a class IIA felony.
