    On Tuesday evening the city council urged community development director Megan McGown to make sure that there are enough holiday events scheduled to take place at Hickory Street Square to ensure that closing off the block is worthwhile. McGown came before the council to ask for the closure of the square to traffic for Christmas events from Nov. 22 through the end of December.     The Cheyenne County School Board met Monday night and again discussed future plans for a new elementary school. Superintendent Jay Ehler elaborated the meetings held last month for the public to voice concerns and ask questions. Ehler discovered that the board needs to better communicate to the community how the plan affects the north side and how transportation will work.     The Cheyenne County School Board took the time to honor young people in the community going above and beyond at their meeting on Monday. The first person to be recognized was Matt McKay for the Sidney Raider webcasting project.     Vorachit Luexayachack, a 40-year-old from Iowa, led Nebraska State patrol on a 40 mile chase through Cheyenne and Deuel counties last week ending in his arrest and the discovery of almost 60 pounds of marijuana. The Deuel County attorney’s office charged Luexayachack with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver or distribute, possession of more than one pound of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance without tax stamps, and operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest.     A coffee social and Veterans Day program was held at 10 a.m. on Monday with the Leyton chorus performing for the Veterans and their families. The Leyton concert band played the National Anthem. The band also played a wonderful rendition of all of the military songs.   • Cheyenne County corn harvest slowed by weather

    This could be a record year for corn harvest, according to a report from the United States Department of Agriculture. The Nov. 8 report stated that national corn production is up one percent from last month’s forecast and is now predicted at almost 14 billion bushels, which represents a 30 percent increase from last year. If correct, this will mean a record production year for the United States. This would be the highest yield in the U.S since 2009, according to the report.     Last year alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Nebraska reached the highest total in two decades, according to the state’s 2012 annual traffic crash facts report. This was the only statistic in the report that worried Nebraska Office of Highway Safety administrator, Fred Zwonechek. “The alcohol numbers were a bit disturbing,” he said. In 2012, 43 percent of fatal crashes in the state involved alcohol.     Those strolling down Illinois Street enjoying the fine weather last weekend might have noticed military uniforms gracing many of the store windows downtown.   • Warren sentenced to prison term for possession, child abuse

    A man who exposed at least one child to illegal drugs was sentenced to 20-60 months in prison on Wednesday for methamphetamine possession and 30-60 months for child abuse. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively. On Sept. 6 Justin Warren, 30, of Kimball pled no contest to possession of methamphetamine, a class IV felony and child abuse, a class IIA felony.     The Status Advisory Board for the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds Foundation appeared before the Board of Commissioners because they discovered that an appointed board was unnecessary, as the foundation created falls under the umbrella of the Nebraska Community Foundation.
