SIDNEY - This past weekend, members from the Sidney Elks Lodge #1894 packaged up 50 care-packages that will be sent to US troops overseas. The Lodge was awarded a $1000 Spark Freedom Grant which was used to purchase care-package contents such as hygiene products, hard candy, jerky and writing supplies. The packages will be packed up and delivered to a base in Eastern Nebraska where they will be inspected, sealed, and then sent overseas.... Full story
On Thursday, June 22, the Sidney Public Library hosted "Music From Around the World" with David Marsh of Humanities Nebraska. A good crowd attended the event that had David Marsh, a master musician and world-traveler, demonstrate and detail all types of musical instruments from around the world. He noted how many instruments from different parts of the world were similar, using the same types of materials in their manufacture, and how some were totally unique to the cultures that developed them.... SIDNEY - Sidney Regional Medical Center will once again be offering free sports physicals. The upcoming dates will be July 14 and 26th, and August 2nd, 9th, and 16th. The available times will be 1pm to 5pm on all dates listed. These exams are free during these dates only. CHEYENNE COUNTY – Cheyenne County Sheriff Office (CCSO) Sheriff Adam Frerichs announced the department made two arrests last week. According to Sheriff Frerichs, CCSO arrested 26-year-old Jonathan Downer for criminal trespassing. However, as CCSO was processing Downer they discovered he also had an arrest warrant out of Cheyenne County and booked him on those charges as well on June 3. SIDNEY – Sidney High School freshman Coy Rosenbaum participated in the Student Angler Federation (SAF) Nebraska State High School Championship last weekend and took home a prize fish. On May 20, Rosenbaum reeled in a 5 pound 14 ounce bass during his run at the state championship at Martin Bay on Lake McConaughy in Ogallala, Nebraska; this catch placed Rosenbaum and his team in 15th place overall. The weather may not have been ideal, but it did not put a damper on the festivities of Cruise Night on Friday. A long line of cars, many classic and historical, cruised up and down Illinois Venue down to Ft. Elks Lodge 1894 in Sidney hosted an Open House and fund raising event on Saturday for the renovation project of the auditorium and building at 1040 Jackson Street in Sidney. Area residents were welcomed into the building and offered tours of the facility, including the upstairs balcony that is slated for renovations and the old city offices located on the second floor. There was a party Saturday afternoon at Hillside Golf Club, and it was to celebrate the retirement of Dean Gipfert after 48 years of dedicated service to Wheat Belt customers in Sidney and throughout the area. Gipfert joined Wheat Belt back in 1975 when he was 18 years old, as an assistant warehouseman.
