  • Will Investors Change Behavior After the Pandemic

    Apr 7, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic may end up changing our lives in some significant ways. To cite one example, it’s likely we’ll see a lot more people continue to work remotely, now that they’ve seen the effectiveness of tools such as video-conferencing. Education, too, may be forever changed in some ways. Perhaps just as important, though, is how many people may now think more about the future – including how they invest. If you work with a financial professional, you may have connected with this individual over the past several months through a videoco...

  • Living a Life Without God

    Apr 7, 2021

We live in a world that seems angry and confusing, and without GOD it is exactly that, without GOD there is no hope. GOD has and is the answer to all of that anger and confusion. Philippians 4:4-9, speaks about looking to GOD and trusting GOD, and HE will give you peace. This scripture give you direction for your life, it give you HOW you can have peace in a world full of turmoil and confusion. It may sound to good to be true, but GOD didn’t make it hard to find the answers we are looking for. In Psalms 23, the WORD of GOD speaks about about G...

  • I Would Have Fired Me

    Brandee Gillham, The Cowboys Wife|Apr 7, 2021

Let’s just cut to the chase. I ran the pick-up off of a bridge. I may or may not have continued to go straight when I needed to turn. This is very far from my normal, but the Lord worked so hard on my humility the other day that I didn’t just eat a small piece of humble pie – I ate the whole pie. It started out as a simple request, “Babe, I think you could help me move some cows from one pasture to the processing pens, by using the feed pick-up to lure them with a bale of hay.” Little did he kn...

  • Master Gardener Tips for the Panhandle

Anita Gail, Nebraska Extension Master Gardener|Apr 7, 2021

Here is the weekly crop of Master Gardener tips from Nebraska Extension in the Panhandle, relevant to local lawn and garden issues in the High Plains and consistent with research-based recommendations. Tread carefully to avoid soil compaction: As you venture out into your landscape and planting beds, be mindful of how wet the soil is. Kids, pets and people walking on soil that has excessive moisture can cause compaction. A compacted soil can continue to cause plant stress throughout the growing season. Walking on wet soil breaks down the soil...

  • Game and Parks Urges Public to Check Aquariums for Invasive Zebra Mussells

    Apr 7, 2021

LINCOLN – After a recent discovery of invasive zebra mussels within Marimo or "moss" balls used in aquarium tanks, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is urging the public to take precautions to prevent the spread of this highly destructive species. A container of Marimo balls sold as "Betta Buddy" was first found to be contaminated with an adult zebra mussel at a Petco store in Washington state on March 3. Game and Parks subsequently inspected two Petco locations in Lincoln and found zebra mussels present in several Marimo ball c...

  • Good Angler Stewardship Means Picking Up Shoreline Little, Recycling Line

    Apr 7, 2021

LINCOLN – As anglers, we mean to be good stewards of our environment. Sometimes, though, we leave something behind. It could be a bait container lid that blew off or a small wad of fishing line in a snag. It all adds up, is a direct reflection on anglers, and is an environmental hazard. The problem with shoreline litter is twofold. Litter is just plain ugly and embarrassing. The view of a lake scene is never improved by a misplaced drink container. But the big issue is that litter damages the sh...

  • Competing in a Virtual Spelling Bee

    Forrest Hershberger, Publisher|Mar 31, 2021

On January 28, Cheyenne County's spellers met at West Elementary School in Sidney to determine who was the best of the local field. • How Much Risk Should You Take Before Retirement?

    Mar 31, 2021

If you’re planning to retire in just a few years, you may be getting excited about this next phase of your life. However, your ability to enjoy retirement fully will depend, at least partially, on the resources you can draw from your investment portfolio. So, while you still have time to act, ask yourself if you’re comfortable with your portfolio’s risk level. Your relationship with risk can change noticeably over time. When you started saving for retirement, you may have been willing to take on more investment risk, which translated into a rel...

  • Eternal Love

    Mar 31, 2021

There’s a 1988 song by the Christian rock group, Petra called “First Love.” Let me quote you the lyrics: 1) Sometimes I feel I’m pulled in so many wrong directions Sometimes I feel the world seducing my affections It’s not that I don’t know the way It’s just a heart that’s prone to stray But with my weaknesses admitted You will keep all that I’ve committed So I commit my heart to You, my First Love 2) It’s taken me some time to try to comprehend A love that doesn’t change - a love without an end A love that keeps forgiving A love of s...

  • Yonts Water Conference Returns April 9

    Mar 31, 2021

Each spring, as the planting season approaches, brings fresh questions about irrigation water: How much water will the mountain snowpack provide to the North Platte Valley? What’s the state of the irrigation infrastructure in the valley? What have we learned about the system in the past year? How does the complex system of dams, diversions, checks and canals work? Will groundwater irrigation regulations stay the same as last year? Answers to these and other questions – as well as some fresh new questions – will be provided by presenters at th...

Nebraska Land Link is now accepting applications from interested land seekers and landowners, with the goal of providing land access using lease agreements, lease-to-own arrangements, buy-sell arrangements or other creative methods that are mutually beneficial for both parties. • UNL FOR FAMILIES: Cooking Dry Beans

Tammie Ostdiek, UNL Extension Educator, Morrill County|Mar 31, 2021

In the early months of the pandemic, non-perishable foods like dry beans were flying off grocery store shelves. If you still have some packaged dry beans in your pantry, winter is the perfect time to prepare them. While canned beans are cooked and ready to be heated, served, or used in recipes, packaged dry beans need to be cooked to a palatable texture. For best results, it helps to understand the variables involved with cooking dry beans. Cooking time depends on the type of beans and the seed...

  • Grain Bins Are Focus of Safety Week

    Mar 31, 2021

LINCOLN – Nebraska farmers continue to be good stewards of the land, producing more bushels with less resources. Because of this increased efficiency, on-farm grain storage is on the rise. With additional grain bins on farms and on commercial sites, there is a greater risk of fatal accidents. The checkoff organizations of Nebraska’s corn, soybean, wheat and sorghum industries (and their respective associations), remind farmers and agricultural workers to be safe in and around grain bins dur...

  • Cheyenne County Republicans Meet

    Mar 31, 2021

The Cheyenne County Republican Committee met March 23, 2021 in the meeting room at the Security First Bank. The first meeting of the new year was spent deliberating over whether to censure Senator Ben Sass. After much discussion the committee decided not to censure Senator Sass, as there is no “teeth” in that measure, and that it would only serve to give him additional publicity. We did instead unanimously vote to approve and pass the same resolution that the Nebraska GOP State Central committee passed, based on 13 points of action or lack of...

    Forrest Hershberger, Publisher|Mar 31, 2021

The location at 9th and Illinois now serves bicyclists and cycling fans. Pedaler’s Corner officially opened Friday, March 26, the culmination of a long journey for Doug and Vicky Loghry. • Business Owners' Issues Go Beyond 'Mom and Pop' Label

    Mar 24, 2021

If you own a small business, you typically don’t get a lot of recognition – so you may be pleased to learn that March 29 is National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day. You might not necessarily think of your business as a “Mom and Pop” operation, but it certainly contributes to the well-being of your family now, and possibly to that of future generations, too – if you make the right moves. Depending on the nature of your business, you may have spent the past several months more concerned about today than tomorrow, given the serious economic...

  • Palm Sunday: What If?

    Mar 24, 2021

This coming Sunday is known as Palm Sunday to Christians around the world. It is a day when we remember and celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ into the city of Jerusalem the week before his death and resurrection. It is also referred to as his “triumphal entry” as he was officially presented to the nation of Israel as their Messiah. It was a day of public celebration and excitement about the future as Christ was welcomed by great crowds of people. We remember their shouts of: “Hosanna… Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord… B...

  • I'd Be Safer in the Tractor

    Brandee Gillham, The Cowboys Wife|Mar 24, 2021

I have recently discovered why a majority of ranch women work offsite. I used to think it was about finances, retirement, career goals, etc. I don’t think any of these are the MAIN reason. Simply, it is safer. Safer to not know the craziness that happens when we are not around on the ranch. As my cowboy and I were discussing preparation for the coming March blizzard we brought up the idea of putting the dozer attachment on the tractor. It was put on the to-do list and that seemed to be the e...
