If you don’t have a spouse or children, you might think you don’t need to do much estate planning. But if you have any assets, any familial connections, any interest in supporting charitable groups – not to mention a desire to control your own future – you do need to establish an estate plan. In evaluating your needs for this type of planning, let’s start with what might happen if you die intestate – that is, without a last will and testament. In this scenario, your assets will likely have to go through the probate process, which means they...
In our own time, maybe no one has seen the social aspects of God’s Kingdom on earth quite like Martin Luther King, Jr. He stood toe to toe with the house of evil. He insisted in a number of his speeches that the key to the future was a certain “maladjustment…” In 1961, Dr. King gave the commencement address at Lincoln University, in which he talked about “The American Dream,” and he said this, “There are certain things within our social order to which I am proud to be maladjusted and to which I call upon all people of good will to be maladju...

Submitted by "The Well-Armed Woman," Sterling, CO chapter After a long winter and a rainy spring, it’s finally feeling like summer, which means it’s time to get out to the gun range. While many of you readers may have been to the range before, a lot of you haven’t or perhaps it’s been a while since you’ve gone. Today, I’ll walk you through what it’s like to go to the range. The first step to hitting the range is to pack. I like to use a small duffel bag as my range bag but there are many types of bags that work well. The essential things to pac...

With digital transformation in the business world accelerating since the COVID-19 pandemic began, many companies are in danger of being left behind – possibly for good. The numbers can be disheartening. “Even after spending enormous amounts of effort and capital on digitalization, more than 90 percent of organizations fail or show poor results in adjusting to the rapidly changing business environment,” says Sri Manchala, the ForbesBooks author of Crossing the Digital Fault Line: 10 Rules of Highly Successful Leaders in Digitalization (www....
The gem about most small towns is you're only a visitor a time or two. Even if you don't live there, if you frequent the cafes and watering holes you soon become as if a minor character in "Friends," where everybody knows your name. That is an atmosphere Jody Aure hopes to continue at the Potter Sundry. The cafe and sweetshop long known for the decadent Tin Roof Sundae is expanding to include bakery items, longer hours to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and souvenir items such as t-shirts...
Among the quiet streets of Sidney is a point of curiosity. The “attraction” actually started with questions of “I wonder…?” and maybe even statements related to the X-Files: the answer is “out there.” In this case, the answer might be somewhere else but the effort to recreate or represent it is near the front door. Sometimes there is a sense of peace in expressing the unknown. Fiction addresses what we can't explain. Likewise imagination can fill in the gap between the seen and unseen, and h...

Over the years since I was a child in church, in various worship services, we have sung the old hymn, "When We All Get To Heaven." The chorus of the hymn says: “When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be. When we all see Jesus, we’ll sing and shout the victory!” This song was a constant reminder that Christians are looking forward to being in Heaven with Jesus Christ some day because of their faith in him. Like the Bible challenges us, we should be anticipating that day with great joy. Heaven will be our eternal home after...
Finding the right spot for your garden, laying out your beds and preparing your soil can be grand adventures. As I have mentioned before, I do not care for weeding my garden, so using weed proofer has saved me hours and hours of labor. It also keeps the soil warmer and moisture locked in. For my row crops I simply cut a slit in the weed proofer and plant my little seeds down those rows. For my starters, I cut a four-inch hole in the weed proofer, place them in their little home and cover the...

When I was a little girl I went to Sunday School and sang “Jesus Love Me” and I knew he was always watching over me. However, I also knew that while watching over me, God also knew everything I did…good or bad! This made me fear Him. I often envisioned Him “making a list and checking it twice to see if I had been naughty or nice”. Sound familiar? I am sure many of you, as children, also had some of those same thoughts. Yes, there is a fear of God, meaning a reverence for His Person and authority, which is the heart of true Faith. However, we mi...
After you have determined the placement and layout of your garden spot, the next thing to get ready is your soil. This is my favorite part of the whole season. There is something about digging in the dirt that is soothing for the soul. There are some amazingly cool resources to help determine if your soil is too acidic or too basic, but I keep my life much more simple than that… I add the same amendment every year and it has never sent me astray. Never! My beds remain uncovered in the off s...
