Like everyone, you want to remain physically and financially independent throughout your life. But if you lose some of this freedom, the last thing you’d want is to become a burden on your family. How can you keep this from happening? First of all, you need to be aware of the risk. Someone turning 65 today has almost a 70 percent chance of eventually needing some type of long-term care, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you face that 70 percent likelihood. In reality, yo...
My wife and I recently received our annual fall flu shot and it got me to thinking about how the vaccine and immunization program has played an important role in avoiding many harmful diseases. Let’s consider the vaccination/immunization process as a way to understand God’s Plan of Salvation. As we all know, the Panhandle of Nebraska is well known for its cows and ranching. Who knew that cows would save the lives of countless people? In 1796, a physician named Edward Jenner decided to prove a theory that had been circulating for some time. Sma...

Established in 2016, Growing Together Nebraska i...

In 2018, a group of guys were pursuing a dream, a cause really motivated by another company's decision. As they introduced themselves to the public, some admitted it was an idea devised during their time in the garage. The idea was to take what they've learned in the corporate world and apply it with their own name. In June 2018, the Sidney City Council approved a 4-acres subdivison on the east side of Sidney for the future site of NexGen Outfitters. The move came after NexGen founders started...

Author James Moore tells the story of a man who died and went to heaven. As he was shown around, he was very impressed with the sights – beautiful gardens full of flowers, and mansions built of marble and gold and precious stones. It was all so beautiful, even more wonderful than he had imagined! Then he was led to a huge room which looked like a storeroom. As far as he could see, the walls were lined with shelves, and it looked like all the shelves were piled high with dried mushrooms. However, when he got to lookin’ a little closer, the man...

We have probably all heard this joke which some people like to tell with different variations: How do you know when a politician is lying? How do you know when an attorney is lying? How do you know when a used car salesman is lying? How do you know when a cable news reporter is lying? Etc. The answer: When they open their mouths. Ha, ha, ha! I apologize for this “cheap shot” joke which makes fun of some honorable professions. However, it does remind us that people often feel taken advantage of, deceived, or lied to in life. This, in turn, can...
Several years ago (before the two youngest ‘pokes were even on the scene), my mama and dad thought it would serve us well to go to Red Feather Lakes for a camping adventure. We ‘pokes applauded this idea heartily. This was practically a boy’s dream! Exploring the forest, sleeping in tents, chasing thieves, starting fires, and hunting moose and bears were all on our agenda. A boy’s plan rarely is thought through beforehand, and usually when an idea occurs, we implement it immediately. Our family...
Lincoln — Most rural Nebraskans believe that agriculture is a driver of economic well-being in their households, communities or both, according to the 2020 Nebraska Rural Poll. Most rural Nebraskans also have deep roots in the state’s agricultural industry, the poll found. These findings are similar to the 2010 survey. Four in 10 rural Nebraskans surveyed sai...
