Volunteering at community gardens: With fall approaching there are many garden tasks to be completed and many community gardens in need of care, including the Scotts Bluff Court House front garden fall cleanup; removing tall grasses at the Guadalupe center rain/pollinator garden; picking produce at the Evergreen Green House in Gering on Wednesdays; and many more. Call your local extension office to see how you can help in the gardens and be less isolated during this time. It’s a great way to make a difference in your community. Enjoying d...

Suicide is reported to be the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. In 2019, 47,511 Americans died by suicide, with an estimated 1.38 million attempts. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention(AFSP), the rate of suicide is highest for middle-aged white men. In 2019, men died by suicide more than three times that of women. In the same year, white males accounted for 69.38 percent of suicide deaths. The AFSP reports on the average there are 130 suicides per day. In...
September is suicide prevention awareness month and is a good time to bring to light the mental health crisis that has grown in every community since the beginning of the pandemic. While mental health struggles have always existed, we are seeing more and more people speaking out about the issues that used to remain in the dark. Since the beginning of the pandemic the nation has seen a rise in the number of cases of attempted suicides and completed suicides. The Nebraska Regional Poison Center has seen an almost 200 percent increase in the...
It’s been called the “Great Resignation” – the large number of Americans voluntarily leaving their jobs. If you plan to be part of it (ideally with another source of employment lined up), you’ll need to make the financial moves necessary to keep mak- ing progress toward your long-term goals. Here’s some background: After a year in which the pandemic caused so many people to lose their jobs, the economy is opening back up, but the “quit rate” – the number of jobs people have voluntarily left – has been breaking records. Some economists say this...
Have you ever tried to define Jesus? I mean, how would you tell someone else who Jesus is? Don’t be too upset if you can’t quite nail it down about who and what Jesus is to you. From the very beginning, most people couldn’t. And even today, there are those who still can’t define Him. There are those of us who spend a lot of time thinkin’ about Him and talkin’ about Him, and we still find it difficult – because – let’s face it – sometimes Jesus is just too big to get a hold of! He’s often ambiguous and unclear and confusing, and in all...

Lincoln - The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Agricultural Profitability and Nebraska Extension will present Returning to the Farm, a workshop series for families who are in the transition process of bringing members back to the farm. It will begin with a two-day workshop for multi-generational families on Dec. 10 and 11 in Columbus. “Bringing a young person into a farm or ranch operation can present challenges,” said Allan Vyhnalek, an extension educator for farm succession. “This...
My first visit to Angel's village was awkward. I stayed with Alfred and Florence. They isolated me in the house's living room and gave me a kerosene cook stove to prepare my food. They didn't know how to handle their village's first white visitor. The following day, both had to go to work. They instructed me to stay indoors with the door locked, except to use the latrine. That was my intent, but then I heard a child crying. I tried to ignore it, but I could not. Looking out a window, I finally s...

This summer I’ve spent time writing about shooting fundamentals and basic range drills. This article will wrap up these topics by going over common shooting mistakes. I’ll categorize the mistakes into 4 categories: Grip/stance, trigger control, aiming, and psychological. Grip/Stance Mistakes Neglecting to have your shooting hand high on the backstrap of the gun or having your support hand too low on the gun. Both of these will make managing recoil harder and will make you less accurate. Standing straight or leaning backwards when shooting. This...

Each weekday in Sidney, a room at the Cheyenne County Community Center is busy with cooks preparing meals. Some of the meals are delivered to Sidney residents, and others are shared in a daily meal time. Meals On Wheels and Congregate Meals both have a place and are managed by the same few people. The programs have been serving Sidney for more than 30 years, according to Judy Schaefer, local administrator of the program. The Meals on Wheels program is made possible by the Aging Office of...

Nebraska District Court Judge Derek Weimer of Sidney, was invited to sit with the Nebraska Supreme Court on Aug. 31, 2021, for the first argument session of the term. The court session was held in the Supreme Court Courtroom in the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln. Seven justices make up the N...
If you’re a grandparent, you don’t need Grandparents Day, observed on Sept. 12, to remind you of the joys of having grandchildren. Yet, you might want to use this day as an opportunity to think about ways to help provide for your grandchildren’s future. The type of gift or support you provide will be different at various stages of your grandchildren’s lives. Here are a few suggestions: When they’re born... • Open a 529 plan. It’s never too early to start saving for college or other types of advanced education. To help your grandchildren...
Perhaps you have heard it said, “sometimes, you have to look over your shoulder to see how much of the field has been plowed.” In my previous life, I worked in the welding and atmospheric gas industries. I used this analogy with my coworkers and fellow employees when we sat down to plan our goals for the upcoming year. Those conversations took time to carefully weigh through all the reasons why our choices and decisions would be made; some of the reasons were within our control, others were not. All these conversations led us to the same cen...
Daryl Koptiva grew up farming. When he wasn't farming, he was custom harvesting. When he wasn't cutting grain, he was repairing machinery to get back in the field. Now he is offering his experience to farmers and ranchers in western Nebraska. He said he left the farm when the work load became more than he could handle. "The farm grew to be a little too much," he said. He had a trucking business that he closed when the last driver retired. His service will include most anything that can break...
Some photography tips to capture great shots of your garden and landscape: Anytime is a good time to photograph something in your garden. But to improve your photography, early morning and late afternoon offer the best lighting of the day. Overcast skies also provide naturally diffused lighting. Shooting during these times limits the harsh, bright light of the mid-day sun. Also take lots of shots so you have a variety that you can look over later and choose the best ones to keep as a reminder of this year’s garden. Flowers are probably e...
The loss of a child can be devastating, life-changing, to the parents. There are the cliches, the unfair expectations of “moving on.” Compassionate Friends is a group of people with similar experiences, parents who have lost children. It offers opportunities for parents to network with other grieving parents. The Sidney chapter hosts events for parents and families to memorialize their children. On Sunday, Sept. 12, the Sidney chapter will host a balloon launch and potluck dinner for parents of children who have lost children. The event is pla...

The Red Carpet Training offers offers the knowledge to increase understanding of the contributions travelers and tourists make to the local economy. Improve customer service skills (anticipating needs, giving...

Labor Day is historically a time to recognize and celebrate the worker, and labor unions. In 1882, Matthew Maguire encouraged all 56 unions in his area to make a “public show of support,” about 12 years before President Grover Cleveland made Labor Day an official holiday. The parade culminated with a festival including a dance pavilion, beer garden, playgrounds and picnic areas. In some ways, community hasn't changed more in the 100-plus years. Two Cheyenne County communities are having communit...
Gerald and Karen Gentry have made their home in Lodgepole for nearly 52 years. They were married in November 1969. The Gentrys were blessed with two daughters, Ronda Sue and Lisa JoAnn. They have two grandchildren, Austin and Ember. Gerald grew up on a farm south of Lodgepole. He graduated from Lodgepole High in 1966. His love for cars led him to build his own body shop on the old football field on the south side of town in 1980. Gerald owned and operated the shop for 36 years. Gerald has...
