Throughout this week, fourth-grade students at North Elementary were taught African culture, history and choreography by Charles Ahovissi. Ahovissi worked with the students to prepare a program that they performed for their parents on Thursday afternoon. The students, dressed in traditional African Kente cloth, performed African dances, recited various knowledge they learned throughout the week and played African drums. "I started this program 23 years ago," Ahovissi said. "I've traveled all...

My column this week is about two different flags and several men who pledged allegiance to the flag that represented their personal beliefs and convictions. The story of these men and the different flags that they honored is entwined within the context of the American Civil War and the banners that hundreds of thousands of men fought under and died for. For the Union, the flag was The Stars and Stripes and for the Confederacy it was The Stars and Bars. Right or wrong, each flag stirred the...

Compiled By The Sidney Sun-Telegraph Staff These stories from the past first appeared in The Sidney Telegraph. Original writing is preserved, though some stories were shortened for space reasons. 50 Years ago Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1964 'The Cookie Exchanges Held On Tuesday' Christmas cookie exchanges are still proving to be one of the most delightful ways to "do your Christmas cookie making" in Sidney, and each cookie exchange party is a wonderful chance to visit, admire the hostess's Christmas...
I love Christmas music. I just listed to Alvin and the Chipmunks singing of “Christmas Cheer.” Then I found the dog’s version of Jingle Bells. Amazing! They bring back memories of good times past. Christmas is supposed to be a happy, joyous season. We read of the angel’s visit to the shepherds of long ago and the glorious song of peace. We dress up our children in old bathrobes and let them act out the Christmas Story. We turn on the TV and see Scrooge redeemed, and Jimmy Stewart discover again his “Wonderful Life.” It’s a happy joyous season...
OSHKOSH – In its final tune-up before hosting its signature event of the season, the Sidney High wrestling team breezed to a pair of wins in a triangular meet hosted by Garden County on Thursday night. The Red Raiders recorded four pins on their way to a 60-18 victory over Hershey, and then registered seven falls in an 81-0 whipping of Garden County. "We did some good things and won some matches that weren't very pretty," said Sidney head coach John Ganser. "One of our highlights would have to b...
ALLIANCE – A fast start often times makes a big difference in a game. The Sidney High boys’ basketball team got out of the gates quickly against host Alliance on Thursday night, en route to a 73-51 victory. The Red Raiders opened up a 15-point lead by the intermission thanks to some great ball movement and pressure defense. They took advantage of numerous Alliance turnovers and cashed them in for points on the other end. Sidney improved to 5-1, while the Bulldogs slipped to 1-5. “We played great team offense, attacking and staying aggre...
ALLIANCE – Frustration may have been setting in for Sidney’s Kelsey Knight, but you’d never know it. After being held scoreless in the first half, Knight ignited the Lady Raiders with a stellar fourth quarter to help lead her team to a 39-31 victory Thursday night on the road against Alliance. Knight finished with a game-high 11 points – including eight of her team’s 14 points in the final period when it made the difference. Sidney, which evened its record at 3-3, trailed 16-15 at the intermission. It managed to outscore the Bulldogs 10-7 in t...
