  • Transformer provided power to half of city in need of replacement

    Caitlin Sievers|Feb 27, 2014

Earlier this week, the city council gave the electric department the go ahead to take steps toward acquiring a new electric sub station transformer. This new station would replace the city’s southern hub, which has been experiencing some trouble including worn parts, a deteriorated power factor and methane gas emissions. Sidney’s electric superintendent, Mike Palmer, presented the issue to the council last month and returned to this week’s meeting with additional information. The recommended maintenance costs to get the current station in be...

  • City gives go ahead to electrical master plan

    Caitlin Sievers|Feb 27, 2014

At Tuesday’s meeting, the city council approved a bid from Olsson and Associates for professional engineering services, including an electric master plan and a study of Sidney’s electric system. In the bid proposal it was specified that this work was not to exceed $65,000. The electric department interviewed three of the five firms from which it received bids on Jan. 7. City staff agreed that Olsson and Associates from Lincoln would be the best company to complete the plan as well as on-call engineering services if required. Included in the pla...

  • Citizenship

    William H. Benson|Feb 27, 2014

The New York Times reported last Sunday that Queen Elizabeth II is strapped for cash. This is a surprising development for an English monarch who owns Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands, acres of farmland, horses, art, and jewelry, and has a net worth that Forbes magazine estimates at $500 million. In addition, she collects 15% of the income derived each year from the Crown Estate, assets that the nation owns but the queen uses, such as Buckingham Palace and the Crown Jewels. “The B...

  • Tales of a coffee-holic: Letting loose

    Caitlin Sievers|Feb 27, 2014

I guess it’s a cliché to say that if we’re not doing anything that scares us, we’re not really living life. Even if it is, I think its a concept most of us don’t normally ponder. We go about our lives, usually following a familiar route even on walks and when driving. We might forgo an exciting job opportunity because we’re under qualified for it when it could be a chance to expand our horizons and learn new things. We might stay in an unhappy relationship out of fear of being alone. I’ve often heard many friends from back home in Indiana talk...

  • Friends of the Sidney Public Library hosts birthday bash for Dr. Seuss

    For The Sun-Telegraph|Feb 27, 2014

“We looked! Then we saw him step in on the mat! We looked! And we saw him! The Cat in the Hat!.” The opening lines from The Cat in the Hat take many of us back to childhood, remembering the comfort of sitting on a loved one’s lap as they read these memorable words to us, and the feel of a much-loved book clutched in little hands. They also evoke an instant picture of that mischievous cat and his iconic red-and-white striped hat. In celebration of the beloved author Dr. Seuss, the Friends of the Sidney Public Library is hosting a Dr. Seuss... Full story

  • The Monuments Men (PG-13)

    Dave Faries|Feb 27, 2014

There was once a charming, make-believe world that appeared on screens big and small. Married couples retired to separate beds. Petty troublemakers like Eddie Haskell represented the worst of juvenile delinquency. Family members donned suits or dresses to relax at home. Oh, sure—gritty film noir murder flicks coexisted with this Rockwellesque world. Even in the toughest of these, however, few characters uttered more shocking than the “d” word. This held true even in war movies: bloodless death, aching sentimentality and the occasional “aw,...

  • Talking Sports: There and getting there

    Stephen McKay|Feb 27, 2014

The NSAA sure knows how to throw a party. At least it may have seemed like a party to the thousands who were in attendance during the three-day 2014 NSAA State Wrestling Championships. This particular event was held at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Though capacity can fluctuate depending on the event, CenturyLink lists its capacity as 18,300. It’s a big place. When the evening sessions were underway, with all four classes wrestling at the same time, it was hard to spot an open seat from the floor. From the cheap seats, the view is even m...
