  • Potter-Dix, Leyton dominate MAC

    Dave Faries, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 30, 2013

Katy Ernest knew where the credit belonged after recording a winning throw of 31-3 in the MAC shot put competition on Saturday: the weather. Not the weekend’s clear and warm conditions, mind you, but the icy blast that wiped out most track meets over previous two weeks. “We spent a lot of time indoors, working on fundamentals,” the Leyton thrower explained. “Taking a step back really helped.” On the other hand, Potter-Dix’s Bryant Knigge felt the recent blizzards almost cost him the conference...

  • Strong finish for Ehler in Denver

    Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Apr 30, 2013

Paxton Ehler and the Rocky Mountain Fever faced fierce competition at the Mile High Classic over the weekend, as basketball teams from states as far away as Tennessee and Washington converged on Denver. The Fever struggled to a 1-3 mark for the tournament, although Kimball’s Mike Daum played a solid four games and Sidney’s Ehler found his touch in the late going. In the opener, the Fever closed to within four points of Texas D1 Roberson behind a 20 point, 16 board night from Daum and 11 points--to go along with 3 steals--from Ehler. The Aus...

  • Conservation agencies encourage best management practices

    Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Apr 30, 2013

LINCOLN – Despite recent precipitation, much of Nebraska is still facing dry conditions. As we head into spring, farmers and ranchers are planning how to best deal with the dry conditions. Conservation agencies including the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) are working together with farmers and ranchers as they get ready to hit the fields. Faced with limited water resources, farmers and ranchers are turning to the NRCS and NRDs for expert advice and assistance to conserve water...

  • Farm bill proposal looks to save $23 billion in spending

    Lisana Eckenrode, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 30, 2013

The American Farm Bureau Federation recently released its proposal for the stalled Farm Bill. The plan, which looks to save $23 billion in farm program spending, would create a new safety net for U.S. farmers. Under the new proposal, producers would be able to choose between a Stacked Income Protection Plan (STAX) program and an updated target price program. All program crop producers would have marketing loan programs and crop insurance available to them as well. STAX would allow farmers to add-on yield or revenue coverage to the crop...

  • No-till Notes: 'Brown revolution'

Mark Watson, Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Apr 30, 2013

It’s sure been an ugly April and that is exactly what we needed. The majority of us have experienced several days of snow, wintery mix, spring showers, and back to blowing snow. April has been above normal in precipitation and it couldn’t have come at a better time. With this moisture has come an optimism that the drought may be easing and we’ll have a chance at producing good crops and hay this growing season. All we need now is for Mother Nature not to forget about us and give us “normal” precipitation the rest of the growing season. O...

As a Member of Congress, I have the honor of nominating a select group of young Nebraskans to attend the U.S. Service Academies. The academies include: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N...

  • From the Editor

    Dave Faries, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 30, 2013

In just a couple of months, hundreds of cars taking part in the Lincoln Highway Centennial will pass through Sidney on their way to Kearney. Yep—as it turns out, the Nebraska town happens occupy a tract of land 1,771 miles from New York and San Francisco. Drivers will depart from both coasts and meet in the middle in celebration of the nation’s first coast to coast highway. Of course, in 1913, the road resembled rutted ranchland in many places. Military vehicles led by Dwight D. Eisenhower along the route in 1919 often bogged down. Yet the pas... Full story

  • Our view

    Sun-Telegraph|Apr 30, 2013

Often the right’s fixation of President Barack Obama’s faults appears more juvenile than effective. The “birthers” shouted with petulant rage over his supposed foreign origins. Gun owners fought back against a fictitious attempt to wipe out Second Amendment rights, something only a vote of the states can accomplish. Talk show hosts look back with comparative nostalgia to the George W. Bush administration--and those are just three examples. In focusing of presumed issues, Republicans have overlooked some of the President’s true political... Full story

    Associated Press|Apr 30, 2013

GERING (AP) — A 39-year-old Scottsbluff man has been given five to eight years in prison for stabbing the husband of his former wife in a dispute over a vehicle. Herman Torres was sentenced Monday in Scotts Bluff County District Court. Court records say he stabbed 35-year-old Jason Lewison, of Scottsbluff, in January. Police say Torres had gone to see Lewison because Lewison and his wife, who is Torres’ former wife, had decided not to sell Torres a vehicle. Lewison was demanding that Torres return the vehicle. • Laying bare your finances to apply for health care

    Associated Press|Apr 30, 2013

WASHINGTON — After a storm of complaints, the Obama administration on Tuesday unveiled simplified forms to apply for insurance under the president’s new health care law. You won’t have to lay bare your medical history but you will have to detail your finances. An earlier version of the forms had provoked widespread griping that they were as bad as tax forms and might overwhelm uninsured people, causing them to give up in frustration. The biggest change: a five-page short form that single people can fill out. That form includes a cover page...

The competition is sponsored every year by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and locally by the Fort Sidney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. • Event draws crowd to downtown businesses

    Lisana Eckenrode, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 30, 2013

The 2013 Girl’s Day Out was a big day for both the merchants and women who participated. Groups enjoyed talking and laughing as they walked from store to store taking advantage of the coupons in the goody bags from merchants throughout downtown Sidney. A shuttle also carried passengers to and from Cabela’s for events held at the retail center. Merchants welcomed the crowds happily into their stores; some offered treats and samples and let people register for giveaways. The day out not only all...
