  • Drunk driving numbers concern state, local officials

    Caitlin Sievers|Nov 11, 2013

Last year alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Nebraska reached the highest total in two decades, according to the state’s 2012 annual traffic crash facts report. This was the only statistic in the report that worried Nebraska Office of Highway Safety administrator, Fred Zwonechek. “The alcohol numbers were a bit disturbing,” he said. In 2012, 43 percent of fatal crashes in the state involved alcohol. The big jump in alcohol-related fatalities, the highest numbers in 20 years, could possibly be an anomaly that will drop back to the usual... Full story

  • Veterans Day

    Shannon Ireland|Nov 11, 2013

Colonel Greg Glover spoke during a Veteran's Day assembly at West Elementary School on Monday morning. "I'm looking for two things: to instill what Veteran's Day is about and to provide the kids with the opportunity to ask questions because they're not often provided with that venue," Col. Glover said. Col. Glover started out as a pilot, but has since switched to working with space operations. He gave the assembly a brief rundown of his job in the service and the purpose of the military as a... Full story

  • Downtown display of veterans uniforms serves as a reminder

    Caitlin Sievers|Nov 11, 2013

Those strolling down Illinois Street enjoying the fine weather last weekend might have noticed military uniforms gracing many of the store windows downtown. These displays, meant to remind citizens to take a moment to think about servicemen and women past and present, are the effort of local man Larry Nelson in conjunction with the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. The uniforms come from locals, living and dead, who participated in World War II, Korea and Vietnam all the way up to current conflicts. There are about 40...

    Stephen McKay|Nov 11, 2013

It's hard to know exactly how Class B's top ranked football team in the state viewed the Red Raiders before their quarterfinal playoff game on Friday. But there was no mistaking how the host Gretna Dragons felt afterwards. In an extremely close game that wasn't decided until the final seconds, the top seeded Dragons prevailed over No. 8 Sidney 24-17 to advance to the semi-final round this Friday. Once the game was over Gretna's senior running back and defensive back Travis Agagah rushed over to...

  • Raiders run ends in Beatrice

    Stephen McKay|Nov 11, 2013

Facing all the challenges of a state-playoff match, the Red Raiders season came to an end at Beatrice on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to the Orange in a sub state pairing. Unlike in past years, district champions no longer earn automatic bids to state. Instead, a system was put in place whereby the top 16 teams - based on season-long power points - would be seeded for preliminary matches. The higher seeds were given home-court advantage. As the ninth seed, Sidney was required to make the long trip...

  • No till notes: 'Grinding'

    Mark Watson Resources Conservationist|Nov 11, 2013

We finally were able to start combining our irrigated corn yesterday afternoon as the moisture in the corn dropped to below 16 percent which was welcome news. Overnight it snowed about 4 inches, so we’re back in a holding pattern again. This has been a familiar pattern this fall planting and harvesting season. I was visiting with a good friend of mine who was comparing his sugar beet harvest to the crab fishermen on the television show “Deadliest Catch.” He felt his sugar beet harvest was similar to the fishermen pulling up empty pots with...
