Four Western Nebraska Community College received $500 veteran's scholarships at a ceremony Thursday morning at the Sidney Municipal Airport. The Veterans Upward Bound program presented two $500 foundation scholarships to Christopher Buckley and Alan Smith. Those were funded through donations to the program via the WNCC Foundation. Richard Weinmaster received his award from the SPC James R. Wolf Memorial Scholarship, while Paul Bennett received a scholarship from Security First Bank of Sidney.... Full story
Peetz Plateau School kicked off its annual Red Ribbon Week, which focuses on an anti-bully/anti-drug message, on Tuesday. William "Bill" Junior Fankhauser, 93 of Humboldt, Neb., was born on Dec. 2, 1920 in Humboldt, to William and Pearl Viola (Kinter) Fankhauser. Bill was raised on the family farm south of Humboldt where he attended country school. He then attended Humboldt public schools and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1938. Velma Jacobs, 97 of Sidney and a longtime Chappell resident, died early Monday evening, Oct. 27, 2014, one day short of her 98th birthday, at the Golden Living Center in Sidney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Mon., Nov. 3, 2014 in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chappell with Father Antony Thekkekara officiating. Dear Editor, Seeing the Sun-Telegraph photo (Oct. 27 edition) of one of our top Sidney Red Raiders cross country runners struggling to reach the finish line at the state championships, well, was painful. Albeit, our Red Raiders boys’ and girls’ cross country teams performed with a mindset like the true champions that they are at state. The boys had to overcome some adversity in hot, humid late October conditions, yet finished in the top 10 teams. The girls were just two teams away from winning it all.
