Sidney High School senior Kaleigh Chavez, a member of the Lady Raiders' golf team, spends time on the driving range at Hillside Golf Course this week. Sidney's golf team qualified for the Nebraska Class B state tournament, which begins Monday in Lincoln, for the eighth time in nine years. Most of us have an extra pair of shoes or boots just taking up space in our closets. Instead of throwing away the unneeded footwear, the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney is collecting shoes from area residents throughout October and November. Its goal is to help the millions of people worldwide who can't afford shoes, and therefore can't go to school or get jobs. The city of Sidney will be observing the Columbus Day holiday on Monday, Oct. 13. All city departments will be closed. The library and landfill will be closed, and public transportation buses will not be running. Trash collection normally scheduled for Monday will be picked up on Tuesday, while Tuesday’s scheduled trash will be picked up Wednesday. Normal city hours will resume on Tuesday. On May 19, 1848, 75 fresh recruits were mustered on the parade ground at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Eugene Leroy Frerichs, 72, passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson after being diagnosed with lung/brain cancer only one week before. Cremation has taken place and there were no memorial services. Eugene Leroy Frerichs was born Dec. 24, 1941 to Esther and Ernest Frerichs. Gene attended a rural school through the 8th grade, high school in Sidney and furthered his education attending a diesel mechanic school in Kansas. Gene owned and operated a diesel repair shop... Trailers, boats and recreational vehicles must be removed from parking spots along city of Sidney streets by Wednesday, Oct. 15. The restricted parking is enforced on all streets inside the city limits and lasts for six months – until April 15, 2015, according to city ordinance #460.06. It’s fall! A new season. You can tell by the crisp morning air, the warm afternoons, people – including me – tending to their gardens and yards to ready them for the new season. Maintaining them sometimes is all it gets, mow, water. Well to really make it flourish you have to do more than maintain.
