    Caitlin Sievers|Oct 4, 2013

Sidney's school zones are safer for the moment due to stepped up police patrols. The Sidney Police Department received a grant for $5,000 from the Nebraska Department of Roads in late August to help promote safety in school zones. "We want to do anything we can to keep kids from getting clipped by cars," said Sidney Police Chief B.J. Wilkinson. The grant allowed the officers to work exclusively around Sidney schools during their off hours to enforce traffic laws and enhance safety awareness during the beginning of the fall semester. The...

    M. Timothy Nolting|Oct 4, 2013

After three years of world conflict, in 1917 a few countries remained neutral in The Great War, among them were the United States, Sweden and Spain. However, between February and April of 1917 German submarines had torpedoed and sunk seven U.S. merchant ships and President Wilson would no longer tolerate the blatant acts of war against the U.S. And so, on April 6, 1917 the United States Congress declared war on Germany. Twenty-three days later on April 29, my grandfather, Wilhelm Fredrick Gustav...

The Panhandle Mental Health Center (PMHC) moved to a new office just over a year ago. The staff decided that a better facility more suitable to their clients was needed. The building on 8th Avenue in Sidney has provided easier access for patients. On Thursday, the staff held a Business After Hours event, inviting the community to see the facility and meet the staff. “We just want people to know that we’re here for everybody and we’re available to serve their needs,” clinician Nichole Peralta...

  • Coyotes dominate Creek Valley in four sets

    Dave Faries|Oct 4, 2013

Taylor Juelfs may be sidelined, but the Potter-Dix senior still played a critical role on Thursday night. As the Coyotes huddled following a first set 25-20 loss to Creek Valley, Juelfs leaned into the circle and asked a simple question: “where’s your fire?” Her words rekindled Potter-Dix’s spirit, as they swept the remaining sets in convincing style, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-12. “We play for Tay,” said Ryley Hicks. With Juelfs and her 6.9 assists per set recovering from surgery earlier in the week, the Coyotes offense figured to sputter. In...

With a large group of students having traveled the 20 or so miles from Bridgeport to Dalton, the battle for the loudest student section at Thursday night's volleyball match was too close to call. But on their home court the Warriors proved too much for the Class C2 Bulldogs, as they won in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-20. For Leyton it was their 19th win against just one loss.
