  • Locals react as Individual Mandate opens

    Shannon Ireland|Oct 2, 2013

The Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” was signed into law in March of 2010, with the first major provision going into effect on October 1. The ACA's individual mandate requires millions of uninsured Americans to sign up for quality health coverage, with subsidies to help cover the expense for some. Those that visit the Health Insurance Marketplace and sign up now will begin to receive coverage in January. Although studies reveal that many people are not aware about the changes that acc...

  • Sharing common sense

    Shannon Ireland|Oct 2, 2013

My generation is jam-packed with over sharers. People use social media as outlets to express their opinions or let the world know their every move. This is especially apparent during any kind of political discrepancy. Just like the Jimmy Kimmel skit asking if people support Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act, people believe that they’re more informed than they actually are. Even celebrities express their political opinions to their Twitter followers and people adapt those views without conducting any of their own research. Procrastinating d...

  • State bar association, local probation officers anticipate big changes as LB 561 goes into effect

    Caitlin Sievers|Oct 2, 2013

The Nebraska State Bar Association hopes that changes to the juvenile justice system in this state will lead youth toward more positive actions instead of deeper into the corrections system. LB 561 was passed by the Nebraska Legislature in May of this year. This bill and the associated legislation bring extensive reform to the juvenile justice system in an effort to expand services and allow alternatives to detention for youth in Nebraska, according to the NSBA. The bill states that, "...the services available for the treatment and...

  • Raiders on a rampage

    Stephen McKay|Oct 2, 2013

Despite a raucous-home crowd and an energetic-pep band behind them the Scottsbluff Bearcats couldn't match the energy of Sidney's Red Raiders on the volleyball court. In an important early season Class B, District 8 clash, the Raiders disappointed the Scottsbluff crowd with a straight-set victory Tuesday night. Sidney won the contest 25-18, 25-19 and 25-17. The win maintains the Raiders perfect record (3-0) in district play while their overall record advanced to 9-5. Scottbluff (5-6, 2-1)...

  • South Platte edges Coyotes in five sets

    Stephen McKay|Oct 2, 2013

With the final going overtime, the Potter-Dix Coyotes volleyball team lost a tough five-set match to the South Platte Blue Knights in a non-district matchup Tuesday night. On South Platte's (6-5) home ground, the Coyotes (4-9) were felled 25-15, 16-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 15-17. "This was a close match the entire night," said Potter-Dix Head Coach Kristi Jung. "We had our opportunities, we just couldn't seem to put them away. In the end it was their defensive play that gave them the edge." Ryley HIcks had a strong service game as the Coyotes...

  • Warriors emerge with sweep at Creek Valley

    Dave Faries|Oct 2, 2013

The shot that clinched Tuesday’s rematch between Leyton and Creek Valley was an accident. With the Warriors’ on top by a narrow 23-20 margin, Diedra Waite occupied a spot on the back line, watching a terse battle at the net. Suddenly the ball ricocheted her direction. The talented freshman threw out both arms, more as a desperate reaction than a considered reply. “It was very chaotic,” Waite said of the resulting point. “I thought it wasn’t going to go. It was a scary moment.” Her accidental sh...

  • Creek Valley's Hayes fires career best round

    Stephen McKay|Oct 2, 2013

The only thing that seems to be able to stop Creek Valley's Tabetha Hayes from reaching lower and lower--a good thing in golf--is the end of the regular season. For the fourth time in her last five rounds, Hayes again cut her competitive best. Her 107 at the Hershey Invite yesterday was a career-best round by three strokes. Meanwhile the Strom freshmen duo of Maddy Johnson and Alexis Olsen came in with a 130 and 138 respectively. "Tabetha met her goal by getting under 110 so I'm proud of her for that," said Storm Coach Cyd Hanson. "She just...
