  • The Value of Housing

    Forrest Hershberger, Publisher Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Sep 30, 2020

“Affordable” has different meanings, depending on if the buyer has two quarters in his pocket or an extensive line of credit. The same can be said for determining a community's housing market. Additionally, available housing is a key part of encouraging economic development of a community. Sidney Economic Development Director Melissa Norgard met with the Sidney City Council on Sept. 22 proposing a comprehensive housing needs assessment of the community. In her proposal, Norgard said the study is...

  • Everyone Please Calm Down

    Dan Carlson, Columnist Prairie Ponderings|Sep 30, 2020

The death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg (RGB) earlier this month and President Trump’s subsequent nomination of Amy Coney Barrett (ACB) to fill her seat has set in motion a chain of events some speculate could lead to another American civil war. The level of hatred being flung at ACB before she even has a chance to field questions from concerned citizens and senators is yet another example of collectivist wrath and judgment in a “guilt by association” context. ACB isn’t Catholic i...

  • Good Writing

    Bill Benson, Columnist|Sep 30, 2020

Mark Twain once said, “The difference between the right word and the wrong word is really a large matter. ‘Tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.” Some writers choose big words to fill up a typewritten page. For example, William F. Buckley, Jr. built an extensive vocabulary and pulled it out often to impress his readers. He once wrote, “I react against declamatory rudeness that is coercive in intent.” Now what did he mean? I think he meant to say that when he hears ano...

  • Public Opinion and Moral Values

Forrest Hershberger, View From The Handlebars|Sep 30, 2020

“Without a vision, the people perish.” That might sound a little preachy, critical, or condemning even. It might even sound a little egotistical. Go my way or you’re wrong. Well, actually that isn’t the point. Even in my age, I never thought I would sit in a newsroom or have a conversation with another news hound in the region who is equally concerned about stories packaged as news but even we have to admit are on the edge of “fake news.” It isn’t because we do or don’t agree with the writer...

  • Lessons from Experienced Investors

    Sep 30, 2020

Those who have lived a long time have done a lot, seen a lot – and can teach us a lot. And that’s certainly true when it comes to investing. Consider some of the lessons you might learn from experienced investors: Regulate your emotions. In the investment world, there’s always something coming at us that could sound scary: political flashpoints, economic news, and even those once-in-a-generation occurrences, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. But older people may take these events in stride; in fact, baby boomers and members of the Silent Gener...

  • Is Civil War Upon Us?

    Brandee Gillham, The Cowboys Wife|Sep 30, 2020

With a houseful of cowpokes it feels like there is always a civil war erupting – there are guns going off, military pursuits, friendly fire and an array of combat situations. "Mama, he hit me on the head!" "Mooooom, he just whacked my nose." "Moooooaaaahhhhhm, he just ________." Fill in the blank. It doesn't really matter what you put there because they have all happened in my home. These are the same brothers that can pick up the baby and snuggle him and give him peace. These are the same b...

Potter-Dix’s Lady Coyote Volleyball team has had success so far in the season, but went through a difficult week, losing four of five matches, with the last two losses coming at a home tournament on Saturday. The week started well for the Lady Coyotes, as they were able to sweep the Wallace Lady Wildcats in two sets, 25-to-18 and 25-to-23. Junior Kendal Nielsen led the attack for Potter-Dix with six kills and a service ace, but the girls could not keep the momentum going and fell in straight s...

    Mike Motz, Sports Reporter|Sep 30, 2020

Creek Valley’s Storm Football team made it three in a row with a lopsided 85-to-14 victory in Harrisburg Friday night. The Storm scored early and often as the Wildcats could not stop the high-powered Creek Valley attack. Players were substituted for most of the game to gain experience at other positions and kept the scores coming quick and from unexpected players like junior center Chase Isenbart cashing in for a touchdown in the rout. Creek Valley will most likely not have as easy a time on F...

Leyton’s Warrior Football team capped Homecoming Week in Dalton with a dominating 47-to-12 victory over the Morrill Lions Friday night. Leyton got the ball back in great field position and quickly marched down the field and scored on a touchdown run by junior K...

Sidney’s Red Raider Football team overcame a slow start to score 26 unanswered points to defeat the South Sioux City Cardinals 26-to-7 in Valentine Friday afternoon. As both teams had COVID-19 cancellations, the Cardinals and the Red Raiders found a way to fill a hole in both of their schedules by each driving midway through the state and meeting at Valentine for a non-conference contest. Both teams came into the game with 1-and-3 records looking for a win to stop two game losing streaks. W...

    Mike Motz, Sports Reporter|Sep 30, 2020

The Sidney Lady Raider Volleyball team had a busy week, starting with a home match against the Chase County Lady Longhorns last Tuesday Sept. 22. Sidney again started slowly, and dropped a tight back-and-forth first set 22-to-25, mainly because of unforced errors. The girls regrouped and refocused and played much cleaner, and were able to take the next three sets 25-to-18, 25-to-22 and 25-to-16 for the 3-to-1 match victory and their 10th consecutive victory.
