Siblings Jessica and Thomas Webb had just returned to Sidney High School on Thursday night following their 75-minute bus ride home from Ogallala for a cross country meet. The plan was to make the short walk to meet their parents at their church and then head home for the evening. They proceeded together from behind the school's gymnasium east toward the intersection of 19th Avenue and Jackson Street. Shortly after – at about 8:15 p.m. – they were both struck by a car while in the crosswalk in...
"I appreciate fine horseflesh as much as the next fellow," Grandpa reflected as he reached into his shirt pocket, extracted a plug of "Tinsley" and cut off a chunk with his ever-ready Case pocketknife. We were leaning against the top rail of the fence, staring across the pasture and had been talking about horses. "But," he continued as he pointed the pocketknife and plug in my direction, "When it comes to all out brute work, nothing beats a good pair of mules." "Now don't get me wrong," Grandpa...

1 YEARS AGO Sept. 20, 1914 'Where Hope was Justified' When I came to Cheyenne County on the 17th of September 1855, I brought hope along, and little else. For five years I hoped and believed that this would make an agricultural country, then faith weakened and I gave up expecting that this would never be anything but a grazing land. The next year, 1881, saw abundant evidence of my mistaken views. This was the first crop we had. And step by step, with an occasional year of backslapping to keep...
The month of October is almost here, and by now students in our schools and universities should be back into the routine of daily education. They should all be back to their books. The time they spend reading and studying these books can be valuable for a life time. Obviously, reading alone will not guarantee learning, but it is a crucial first step toward knowledge that can change a person’s life. The same is true for those who claim to have a relationship with God. Reading, knowing and obeying the Word of God is crucial for any l...
The Sidney High volleyball team started out slow, but finished strong in its second home triangular of the season Thursday night at Cabela’s Athletic Facility. The Lady Raiders (4-6) were swept by Gering, 25-15 and 25-12, but bounced back to earn a sweep over Kimball, 25-23 and 25-20, in the nightcap. The Lady Raiders opened the first set against Gering (8-7) with a 5-3 lead. But Gering found a rhythm and took off on a 6-0 run that was mainly built upon unforced Sidney errors. The Bulldogs took the lead 6-5 in the middle of its run and never re...

Senior Hayden Lieneman came in about a half second behind Henning for third place. For Lieneman, it was his...
