  • Planned electric work promises more power to city

    Caitlin Sievers|Sep 26, 2013

Sidney's electric department officials are working to bring the city one step closer to a more flexible system offering more power. The city received bids for a new electrical distribution tie line Sept. 11. The low bid was from Ward Electric Company in the amount of around $230,000. Public services director John Hehnke recommended approval for the bid at Tuesday's city council meeting. A few years ago the electricity department placed a larger transformer at the north substation, which has the capability to supply more power to town,... Full story

  • Tales of a coffee-holic

"What are you?" is probably never a question that most white people will ever be asked without some confusion. Those of even a slightly darker complexion, sadly, know exactly what it means. I have quite a few friends who had told me they deal with this question on a regular basis, but had never actually witnessed it until last weekend. Although property tax collections were lower than anticipated, collections in October are usually pretty substantial, she added. The city is pleased with the sales tax numbers at this point. September...

There are an interesting slate of games approaching on the local sports calendar this week. Of all the battles on tap this week the most intriguing just might be the on the volleyball court. On back-to-back nights Creek Valley and Leyton will renew a rivalry that has already produced high drama this season. But I like to save the best for last - so more on this later. But here's a look at some of the other exciting match ups this week. Football: Leyton at Hay Springs. Thursday @ 7 p.m. - The gridiron action starts early this week with the... Full story

  • Raiders, McCook share physical football style

    Stephen McKay|Sep 26, 2013

With an all-day rain on Monday, it was the perfect time for the Sidney Red Raiders football team to get last Friday night's loss to second ranked Aurora out of its system. The sodden afternoon allowed coach Todd Ekart to gather his troops inside for an extended film session. Once the lessons were learned and the film session over, there could be no more time for dwelling on the past. For what awaits Sidney at Weymouth Field this Friday night at 7 p.m. is another tough opponent in the McCook...
