  • Police to enforce abandoned vehicle ordinance

    Caitlin Sievers|Sep 25, 2013

Anyone in Sidney with a broken-down car in the front yard should expect to hear from police sometime soon. At Tuesday night's city council meeting, Sidney Police Chief B.J. Wilkinson asked the council to accept a bid for a towing contract between the city and Affordable Towing for the removal of abandoned and unlicensed vehicles illegally stored on private property. The police department received only one bid on Sept. 9. "We had lots of interest, we only had one bid returned," Wilkinson said.... Full story

  • The need to explain

    Shannon Ireland|Sep 25, 2013

Over the weekend, I got a few strange looks. I didn’t realize why and then it hit me—my shirt read “KOK.” I want to take a second to explain that my t-shirts are not innuendos. KOK stands for Kilroy’s On Kirkwood. It’s a bar in my college town that gives out free shirts every Thursday and on Saturdays during football and basketball season when they have breakfast club. I’d also like to say that I’m not an alcoholic either. It was a free shirt every week. What college kid is going to pass up a deal like that? I’ve never thought anything...

  • County budget sees increases

    Shannon Ireland|Sep 25, 2013

The Cheyenne County Commissioners approved the proposed budget for 2013-2014, and some of the line items took a significant jump. Big changes occurred in the communications center and wireless 911 services, shoot from $390,354 to $560,390 and $4,644 to $128,370, respectively. “I think they were just inflationary costs. I don’t know that there was one particular thing that made this huge jump,” Cheyenne County Clerk, Beth Fiegenschuh said. The rules governing allocation of funds are strict, with money directed toward specific projects or categ... Full story

  • Final approval given for Cabela's expansion

    Caitlin Sievers|Sep 25, 2013

The Tax Increment Finance plan for the Cabela's Corporate Campus Expansion received final approval Tuesday night by the Community Development Agency and the city council. After a referral back from the planning commission with assurance that the master plan for redevelopment of the 27 acre tract of land owned by Cabela's and the 14 acre tract of land owned by Tim Reganis was in line with the city's 2012 comprehensive plan, the CDA and then the city council both approved TIF for the project. This area is considered blighted and Cabela's asked...

  • Storm can't sink Sailors

    Dave Faries|Sep 25, 2013

Creek Valley didn’t need a break. After 10 days off from competition, the Storm returned to the court Tuesday night, only to be swept away by visiting Sutherland, 3-0. Their previous outing had been on Sept. 14 at the Garden County tournament. “We were rusty,” Shania Brown admitted. Creek Valley allowed the Sailors to run up a 5-0 lead in the first set before Brown faked a set then issued a deft sideways tap to earn the Storm’s first point. In the second, the home side again fell behind early, conceding a 6-1 advantage. Yet on both occasio... Full story

  • Potter-Dix drops two at Paxton

    Stephen McKay|Sep 25, 2013

Though 1-0 in district play, the young Potter-Dix Coyotes volleyball team's overall record slipped to 2-7 after dropping a pair of matches at a Paxton triangular meet last night. Host Paxton (6-5) first handed the Coyotes a straight set loss 25-15 and 25-9. In the nightcap, Potter-Dix gave the Wallace Wildcats (6-3) a fierce battle. In the end, however, the Coyotes dropped a three setter 13-25, 25-16 and 22-25. "We really struggled to get going tonight. We had way too many unforced errors against Paxton," said Coyotes Head Coach Kristi Jung....

  • Peetz head into homecoming weekend on a roll

    Stephen McKay|Sep 25, 2013

The Peetz volleyball team reached the .500 mark last night with a 3-1 win over the visiting Pawnee Coyotes. After opening the season with stiff out-of-district competition, the Bulldogs have fared well in district play with a 4-1 mark. Setters Jessica Uhl and Jodie Schumacher helped the hitters have a good night with 22 and 20 assists respectively. The biggest beneficiaries at the net were Mikenna Curlee and Morgan Burns with 16 and 14 kills. Mallori Bjerke had six kills and Melissa Schumacher five. Curlee had a strong night at the service...

  • Warriors sweep Bayard triangular

    Stephen McKay|Sep 25, 2013

Though it wasn't always easy, the Leyton Warriors volleyball team swept two matches in a triangular meet at Bayard last night. While the Warriors (11-1) easily dispatched Garden County (3-10) in straight sets 25-13 and 25-17, the host team gave them all they could handle. Bayard edged Leyton in overtime in set one 26-24. After turning back the hosts in game two 25-17, the game for all the marbles went into overtime. This time Leyton turned the tables on the Tigers 26-24 to capture the all-import... Full story

  • Sidney finishes strong in loss to Chase County

    Stephen McKay|Sep 25, 2013

Down two sets to none and trailing 24-22 in the third set at Chase County's home gym, the Raiders volleyball team called time out. That must have been when they decided they weren't going to go down without a fight. Whether as simply stated as Yogi's, "It isn't over 'til its over," or as poetic as Dylan Thomas' "Don't go gentle into that good night," Sidney refused to leave Imperial without showing a little bit of what they are made of. Though the Raiders (6-5) fell to the Longhorns (8-3) in... Full story
