SIDNEY-- On Wednesday, September 4, Sidney City Manager David Scott met with the Sun-Telegraph to go over details of this year's Sidney City Budget and answer questions on details of the budget and other matters. The City of Sidney held its Budget Workshop a few weeks ago on August 7, and many details for this year's budget were worked out at that session. We wanted to allow Scott to discuss some of the budget items in detail and clear up any misconceptions others may have about the process....
(Editor's Note: A correction/clarification has been made to the online version of this article. The original article said that Gwen Devie resigned her position in part because the issue of the water tower being decommissioned was not addressed properly. The reason for her resignation was solely over concerns of the village's handling of finances. We apologize for the error.) LODGEPOLE--The Village of Lodgepole held its regular meeting on September 3, and agenda items were discussed, the...
SIDNEY-- A break-in was caught on video surveillance at Little Tornado Towing and Recovery in Sidney earlier this month, and the victim posted the video of the alleged perpetrator on social media. That action has been credited with the quick identification of the burglary suspect. On Thursday, September 5, Sidney Police Chief Joe Aiken said that the Sidney Police Department had identified the suspect and knew his whereabouts. The video showed a young man in a blue shirt and dark-colored shorts...
As you may recall, I have written about the not-so-special legislative session in some of my recent articles. For the past week I have been researching the implementation of LB 34, the so-called property tax relief bill that was passed during the special session of the Legislature in August. As I have read and reread that legislation, it has become apparent to me that the legislature, including me, missed an important piece about how that bill would be implemented. The special session started...
No one is perfect. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Those who are most successful, build on their strengths while striving to overcome their weaknesses. It's not unusual for a trait that initially appears to be a weakness to actually be a strength. I came across the following parable which nicely shows this point. Many years ago, a farmer had to get his household water from a nearby stream. To get as much water as possible from each trip, he used two large clay pots, each fastened...
Universities opened their doors a week or two ago. Freshman students moved into their dorm rooms, met their roommates, hung pictures on the walls, and completed their class schedules. Most students want to do well, even just ok, at college, but not everyone does. How well any student completes his or her mastery of course work at a college depends upon that student's preparation, his or her readiness, his or her skill at reading and writing, plus his or her ambition, hustle, and drive. Yet, abov...
"Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Knock and doors will be opened unto you." Matthew 7:7. This verse is full of 'double dog dares'. Dare we ask for truth in campaign issues? Dare we search out voting records and lifestyles of candidates? Dare we knock on doors inviting friends and neighbors to vote? Benjamin Franklin, aged 81, wept after signing the Constitution. "We have given you a [Constitutional] Republic, if you can (dare) keep it." Do we dare? September 17 is...

The Dan Gillespie Soil Health Fund (DGSHF) knows that the creativity and ideas of farmers, ranchers, teachers and students can often exceed the budget available for special projects. The fund was established to promote educational practices related to soil health and regenerative agriculture, including but not limited to no-till farming, water conservation, tree...

MINDEN NE--Last week the Red Raiders opened the season with a dominant, if not workman-like, performance in their victory over the Cozad Haymakers at Weymouth Field. In their follow-up performance, Sidney traveled three hours and took away a victory with big plays and aggressive defense. The team is proving to be very capable on both sides of the line with a well-balanced offense that makes big plays, and a defense that hits hard, gets to the ball quickly, and gets off the field. Friday night's...

Sidney's match against Yuma started with the teams trading points the whole way in the first set until Sidney gained an edge and took the first set, 25-to-23. HARRISON-- The Sioux County Warriors were able to build up an early lead against the Leyton Warriors on Friday, then held on to take the 46-to-31 victory. Leyton played well, scoring in every quarter, but the 20 points in the first quarter and 18 points in the second Sioux County put up were too much for the Warriors to overcome. Sophomore Austin Beutler excelled throwing the ball, passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. The Warriors next travel to Crawford on Friday to take on...
ILIFF, CO.-- The Peetz Bulldogs looked to rebound from an opening-day loss to Potter-Dix, but the Caliche Buffaloes running game was too much for the Bulldogs to handle. Caliche gained an early lead and was able to maintain their advantage and ended up with the victory, 46-to-38. Caliche started the game with the ball, and used five straight running plays to march down the field and take a 7-to-0 lead. Caliche then recovered an onside kick to get the ball again. The Buffaloes drove the ball agai...

After the old business was discussed, the attendees went on to the current agenda. A delicious lunch of lasagna and a salad was provided by Ann Wick. The "Movies in the Park" events turned out to be well-attended, however, the attendance seemed dependent upon the popularity of the movie presented. Free popcorn was supplied for the events by the...

Dear Editor, Nebraska will be going from the frying pan into the fire if legal medical marijuana is passed into law. In my state of Colorado, which passed “medical” marijuana in 2000, the scant income from the sale of cannabis is dwarfed by the increased costs of automobile accidents, driving under the influence, addiction treatment, educational problems, increased domestic and street violence, as well as a lowered perception of harm by teens. If legalized, weed will immediately become more accessible to teens. Suicide is now the #1 cause of...
