The green and yellow decorated halls at Peetz Junior and Senior High School were bustling with students and teachers on the first day back Tuesday morning. The Sidney City Council met on Tuesday for a workshop to discuss the upcoming fiscal year’s budget. The discussion had originally been scheduled for the council’s regular meeting last week, but was tabled until Tuesday to allow the council more time to talk over the budget. While approval of the final budget is expected to take place at a meeting next month, the council reviewed city departments’ expected revenues and expenses. Three Cheyenne County communities could receive storm warning sirens if applications for grant funds are approved. Ron Leal, the county’s emergency manager, told the Board of Commissioners at Monday’s meeting that grant applications could be submitted to acquire the sirens for Brownson, Sunol and Lorenzo. Chloe Cheneby, a 13-year-old battling a life-threatening metabolic disorder in Washington, fell in love with Birmingham, a 6-month-old Golden Retriever, Gordon Setter and Bernese Mountain Dog mix. The only problem: Birmingham was at the High Plains P.AW. (People for Animal Welfare) shelter in Sidney. Mary Ann Rieken, 86 of Sidney, passed away in the early morning on August 16, 2015 in the comfort of her home that she loved for the wonderful times and memories she shared with her family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 20 with Wake Services at 6 p.m., Wednesday evening, Aug. 19. Ongoing Dalton Prairie Sooner Museum open Saturday and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. for the rest of the summer. The Farmer’s Market is held on Saturdays through Oct. 10 at Hickory Street Square in Sidney from 8 -11 a.m. The Bridge Marathon will begin playing again in September. Grain dealers and producers should be aware that changes to the Grain Dealer Act become effective Aug. 30. In May, the Legislature passed LB 183 modifying certain portions of the act. With the effective date just weeks away, the Nebraska Public Service Commission wants those affected to be prepared. Kimball County Tourism is hosting the second annual “Shootout at the Kimball Korral,” Series 1 and 2 Cowboy Mounted Shooting Competition on Aug. 23-24. Runza Restaurants will conduct its 13th annual Great Books for Great Kids fundraiser on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The money will benefit local libraries, schools and literacy organizations and be used to purchase children’s books. Last year, more than $42,000 was raised to benefit children in communities with Runza locations, and in the past 10 years, more than $361,000 has been donated. The John Henry Hinrichs farm in Sidney recently received an award from the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation and the Nebraska Farm Bureau that honors families with 100 years of farm ownership. The Hinrichs' farm consists of 160 acres and was originally acquired on June 27, 1900. Sidney High School will hold its annual Gatorade scrimmages on Friday, Aug. 27. The evening begins with the Lady Raiders’ volleyball team taking to the Cabela’s Athletic Facility court at 5:30 p.m. After volleyball, the action will move outside to Weymouth Field where the Raiders’ football squad will take to the gridiron for a 7 p.m. start.
