When school starts on Aug. 18 drivers need to keep a watchful eye for pedestrians big and small. “We’re going to have all kinds of kids out, we’ve got new drivers coming out,” said Cheyenne County Sheriff John Jenson. With the addition of 20 preschool students, the entire enrollment at Sidney public schools rose from 1,260 in September 2013 to 1,342 as of Monday, an increase of 82 from last year. Sidney’s pre-school is full with 40 students. On the first day of school in the fall of 2013, there were 111 kindergarten students enrolled. Herman Ben Jürgens passed quietly in the morning of July 26, 2014 with his loving wife of 69 years, Delores R. Jürgens at his side in their home in Branson, MO. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Lynn, mother, Annette, father, Ben Chris, two sisters, and twelve half-brothers and sisters. Florence L. Gish, 102, of Loveland, Colo., the daughter of Hattie and Henry Blome was born February 12, 1912, in Dalton, and passed away on August 6, 2014. On May 19th, 1939, Florence married Lyle Gish in Storm Lake, Iowa. She taught at North Ward Elementary in Sidney, retiring in 1997. She was a fifty year member of the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church. In 2001 she moved to Buffalo, Wyo. and then to Loveland in 2008. It was 276 long days ago that the Sidney Red Raider football team played in its first playoff game in the last 21 years.
