Sometimes tragedy can spark generosity. When 2-year-old Kyra Eads underwent cancer treatment in Denver, she received toys after chemotherapy and radiation. This process helped her get used to the treatments, said Eads' mother Kaila Kuhns. Kuhns was inspired to create her charity, Kyra's Kisses by how much this small reward comforted her daughter. Kuhns founded the charity, which provides new toys to local hospitals in February. "It's been amazing," Kuhns said. "We've had nurses call and thank...
Sidney has a rich history. The city is working to ensure that history is properly preserved. In a huge step toward future preservation, the city adopted a historic preservation plan during Tuesday’s city council meeting. “The purpose of it is just to help give the city’s preservation program direction in terms of preserving our historic assets,” said Megan McGown, Sidney’s community development director. In 2012 the city received a Certified Local Government grant from the National Parks Service and state Historic Preservation Office. T...
The city of Sidney Parks Department will conduct initial mosquito spraying on Sunday evening July 28th. Weather permitting, spraying will continue each Sunday evening from approximately 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., into early September, or as needed based on weather and mosquito populations. The city is spraying to kill adult mosquitos that may be carrying the West Nile Virus (WNV). WNV poses a serious public health concern in our community, since it can cause serious illness in people. I complain too much. I have a (hopefully) stable job that I actually enjoy, I have a roof over my head, albeit a very tiny section of roof and I have many people in my life that care about me. But I still feel the need to constantly complain about things that really aren’t that important. I think complaining makes us all feel a little bit better about our own personal plight and helps us to vent frustrations about whatever is going wrong in our lives. Complaints can be a good thing or a bad thing. I find legitimate complaints about a wrong d...
Dear Editor, Regarding the article about the Commander’s Home from last week, I was so surprised that Jill Dolberg with the Nebraska State Historical Society would condone putting modern vinyl-clad replacement windows in a historic building that I felt compelled to do some fact checking. I called Ms. Dolberg to inquire about the letter sent to the Cheyenne County Historical Society referenced in the article. After speaking to her and reading the letter, I found it evident the content of the letter was grossly mischaracterized. First, the l...
I just completed my first summer—or three weeks I should say—covering Sidney Post 17 legion baseball and I have to say it was a blast. Despite an unfortunately early exit from the district tournaments for both the junior and senior teams, getting to know the players, coaches, parents and everyone behind the program was a gratifying experience for me. I would like to take a moment to congratulate the players and coaches on fine seasons. I would also like to thank everyone involved with the program for welcoming me so warmly into the com...
