    Forrest Hershberger, Publisher Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Jul 22, 2020

It isn't often an insurance carrier approaches a client with the words “Here's a check.” More often it is facing the challenge of minimizing claims and related increases. But that was not the case in the July 14 Sidney City Council meeting when the City was presented with a check for about $146,000. The return was presented by Rob Robinson of Points West Insurance. “What its based on is your loss ratio,” Robinson told the city council. He said in addition to safety, company also stresse...

  • Flatulence Among the Bovine Burgers

Forrest Hershberger, View From The Handlebars|Jul 22, 2020

Several years ago, I read through a proposal that brought together a strange unity of “The Jetsons” and the latest “save the animal of the month” club. There was a report released of meat, a hamburger patty as an example, made entirely in a lab. Scientists glowed with the excitement of having what was biologically, chemically, a beef patty. What it lacked was the rancher walking the field, immunizing the herd, the 4-H teens growing up with more than dust on their boots and not blinking an eye to...

  • Keep Decisions Local

    Dan Carlson, Columnist Prairie Ponderings|Jul 22, 2020

The fight between collectivists and individualists continues to be manifested by those calling for and opposing “one size fits all” approaches in fighting the coronavirus. We see it in calls for national and statewide mandates to wear masks and demands that schools reopen or remain closed this fall. The idea that people in Washington, D.C. or Lincoln can dictate policy to people in a county hundreds of miles away flies in the face of individualism. This is especially true in matters such as an e...

It's time to reopen Nebraska's schools. Children need to learn, so it is time for them to go back to school next month. Gov. Ricketts agrees. On Friday he said we can reopen the schools and manage the coronavirus at the same time, and I agree. Opening up the schools can be done safely. Matthew Blomstead, Nebraska's Education Commissioner, released a 25 page document last Friday explaining how we can open up our schools safely. The document includes recommendations to school districts for...

  • What Should You Do With An Inheritance?

    Jul 22, 2020

If you were to inherit a large sum of money, what would you do with it? The question may not be hypothetical, especially if you are in the millennial, Gen X or Gen Z demographic groups. That’s because the baby boomers – often referred to as the richest generation in history – are poised to transfer some $30 trillion in assets over the next few decades, according to the consulting firm Accenture. Of course, this is a “macro” figure, and everyone’s situation is different. Furthermore, since baby...

Doug Birky, Evangelical Free Church Pastor|Jul 22, 2020

It finally happened in the heat of this Summer. Our Sidney High School Seniors were able to have their graduation ceremony this past Saturday morning. It was a very unusual ending to a most unusual school year. Hopefully our graduates were encouraged with this final event of their school careers after the disappointment of not being able to enjoy so many other year end activities. As a community we want to once more congratulate our Seniors, and wish them the very best in the days to come. As a community of faith in God, we are also praying...
