Wheat harvest 2016 is underway. After a few test cuts early last week, combines began rolling in earnest over the weekend. While some pockets of wheat were ripe enough to harvest mid-week, hot days allowed many farmers to begin Friday, with the biggest push Saturday. Scoular Grain reported test weights are about average, with most around 59 or 60 pounds. Some, officials said, is lower, but the bulk matches the 60 pound per bushel standard. The City of Sidney Parks Department will conduct initial mosquito spraying on Sunday evening, July 17th . Weather permitting, spraying will continue each Sunday evening from approximately 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm, into September. In tropical countries, mosquitoes transmit malaria, Dengue fever, yellow fever, Zika virus, and filariasis among other diseases. Sidney's Cal Ripken baseball team came through its bracket the hard way over the weekend, but emerged as state champions on its way to the 11-and-under regional baseball tournament in Council Grove, Kan.
