Sidney's Meals on Wheels program delivers more than just food. Volunteer drivers make sure that the person they're delivering to has a home that's in a livable condition. Drivers are instructed report any problems they see and let family members or officials know if the person they're delivering to seems to be sick or hurt. Tears of joy fell from her eyes as Viola Christensen sat with her sister-in-law Doris Dickes and niece Terry Kuehn. Asked by her niece why she was crying, Christensen responded, “It’s my first birthday party.” But July 4 will be the 99th anniversary of her birth. Esther J.M. Frerichs, age 97 of Sidney, NE and longtime Gurley area resident, passed away at the Sidney Regional Medical Center Extended Care, Monday morning, July 1, 2013.
