Sidney High School students will soon have the chance to give an area home a makeover and hopefully raise some scholarship money in the process. Nebraska Tourism brought a group of 20 national travel writers through Sidney this week. On Wednesday morning they met with outdoor experts at Cabela's to hear about new trends in camping and other activities. The writers contribute to such publications as The New York Times, Family Circle, National Geographic Traveler, Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel, Barron's, The Wall Street Journal and other papers. The Sidney school board approved bids for new carpeting at three of its schools at Monday's meeting. The board accepted a bid from Steffens Home Furnishings for around $33,000 for carpeting at Central Elementary and the Middle School. It also approved a bid from Dick's Flooring at around $16,000 for new carpet at West Elementary. On Saturday, June 21, at 11:00 a.m. the Pony Express Trail Association will be dedicating their 63rd Pony Express granite monument. This monument will honor and tell the story of the "Deep Well" Pony Express station site in this area. Regional Historian Gordy Wilkins will be Master of Ceremonies with guest speakers. Barbara Farthing, 68, a former Sidney resident passed away Wednesday morning June 18, 2014 in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
