Nicholas Schmit, a Utah man, died Wednesday morning on highway 30 about a half-mile west of Lodgepole. It is estimated that the 27-year-old from Grantsville was traveling by motorcycle when he ran into a sign and died of resulting blunt force trauma at approximately 1:30 a.m. Lodgepole residents discovered the accident at 5:10 a.m, according to Cheyenne county attorney, Paul Schaub. With six runs in the first and four more in the second, Post 17 had all the runs it needed for an easy 10-2 win over Buckley at Legion Field last night. Before the game the juniors and seniors gathered on the basepaths to honor the late Benny Hochman. Hochman, who survived the death camps at Auschvitz and Buchenwald during World War II, was a longtime Sidney resident and supporter of Legion baseball. Helen Marie Jeppesen (age 91), a retired Kindergarten teacher of Sidney Public Schools, died the 25th of October, 2012 at Mapleton Care Center in Lakewood, CO. Robert J. Shelley went to be forever with the Lord Wednesday, May 22, 2013. He was born July 17, 1949, in Sidney NE, to Everett A and Leona A (Loebe) Shelley. The twelveth of thirteen born to their union, he grew up and graduated High School in Sidney. He married Vicki Smith on December 13, 1969 and was blessed with three children. He served in the US Navy June 1968 through September 1972 on the USS Hornet, USS Samuel Gompers and the USS Chicago. He moved his family to Byers, CO in March of 1973.
