  • Watson blasts both parties during Sidney campaign visit

    Caitlin Sievers|Jun 3, 2014

Independent candidate for U.S. Senate, Todd Watson promises to answer to no one but the citizens of Nebraska. “We need a new voice not tied to the party power,” he said, during a campaign stop in Sidney on Monday. Watson was born and raised in Lincoln and received his masters degree in accounting at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s been an entrepreneur for most of his life. He currently owns two businesses and that employ 60 people. “In a day when we need jobs, I’ve created them,” Watson said. The two party system doesn’t work, in his...

  • Historic B-17 roars over Front Range

    Dave Faries|Jun 3, 2014

Frank LaBlotier remembers his first mission as a B-17 waist gunner. He was five miles over the submarine pens at St. Nazarre on the French coast, huffing oxygen from a bottle, wrapped badly against temperatures in the 50 degree range-below zero-watching German fighters line up to attack his bomber. "I thought 'what am I doing here?'" recalled the Denver native, then 19-years-old. On Monday afternoon, LeBlotier joined a group of journalists for a ride in a historic bomber decked out to resemble...

They won the bikes in a drawing held in conjunction with the Sidney Police Department on Monday. A group of about 20 kids waited in anticipation of the drawing, and many smaller prizes such as bike locks, helmets, and license plates were also awarded. • Physical Therapy Today: Assistive devices

    Casey Cortney, Licensed Physical Therapist|Jun 3, 2014

For most individuals, the probability that an assistive device may be needed seems very unlikely. Walking, and basic movements like getting out of bed, in and out of a car and climbing up the stairs are some of things we take for granted. As one gets older, muscles and joints tend to degenerate, resulting in aches and pains. The fact is, you may need to use a cane / walker or other assistive devices at some point in your life. Age-related pathologies like osteoarthritis or sudden traumatic injuries can lead to difficulty with daily tasks....

  • Thinking about health: Taking unnecessary antibiotics can be harmful

Trudy Lieberman, Rural Health News Service|Jun 3, 2014

How many times have you walked away from the doctor’s office with a prescription for an antibiotic to treat a cold? Probably many. Over the decades we’ve been conditioned to believe that antibiotics are sort of an insurance policy against some malady that might be worse than a cold or that they will make the nasty symptoms magically disappear. In recent years, study after study has shown that this “just-in-case” medicine comes with oodles of side effects and serious consequences that might make patients think twice before dashing off to the...

  • From the editor: A bucket full of dreams

    Dave Faries|Jun 3, 2014

Does a bucket list consist of dreams or goals? I suppose it depends upon the person creating said list. I might reasonably say that one day I hope to see another 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird in passing on some rural highway. The last time it happened was a surprise—a big shark-nosed, big winged hemi-powered beast parked at a gas station in the wilds of a Chesapeake Bay peninsula. On the other hand, for me to jot “own a Superbird” on my bucket list … well, that defies reality. First I would have to claim several million in lottery winning...
