At the height of Tuesday night's thunderstorm, Sidney Public Service Director John Hehnke spotted very little in the way of damage. In fact, he spotted very little at all. The local sales tax increase voters approved in November becomes a pocketbook reality on July 1. State Tax Commissioner Doug Ewald issued the announcement on Tuesday, confirming that Sidney's local sales and use tax will increase to two percent, with funds going toward city infrastructure improvements. Annexation with Potter of the old Sioux Army Depot was the topic of conversation at Tuesday evening's City Council meeting—in between bouts of thunder and tornado warnings. Eventually the council approved an interlocal agreement between the communities. Statistics show that, during the summer months, there is sometimes a rise in head injuries/traumatic brain injuries. People are involved in activities more often that may lead to head injuries: water sports and activities, football camps, motorcycle riding, bicycles and swimming. Sidney Regional Medical Center (SRMC) recently welcomed Rachel Wergin to their staff as a full-time speech language pathologist. Tickets are on sale for West Nebraska All-Star Games that will be played Sat., June 1, in Scottsbluff. The 29th annual volleyball game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at WNCC Cougar Palace. The football game will be held at Bearcat Stadium at 7 p.m. A single-game ticket for the volleyball game or football game is $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12 if purchased in advance. Christopher S. Adams, 47, of Kearney, died Monday, May 27, 2013 at his home. A memorial service will be 10:30 AM, Friday at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney.
