Cost estimates for the 11th Ave. beautification projects presented at Tuesday’s city council meeting were higher than expected. Caitlin Sievers|May 15, 2014

More downtown parking is in Sidney’s future. At Tuesday’s meeting, the city council approved the purchase of property located at 812 9th Ave. to provide additional parking in the area. The city entered into an agreement to purchase two commercial properties from Mildred Elwell for the price of $50,000. The property includes a building as well as a fenced lot. “It’s an old structure that has a lot of structural damage,” said city manager Gary Person. “And obviously it has a lot of wear and tear from its age.” The structure and lot are both curr...

  • Tales of a coffee-holic: Harsh words

    Caitlin Sievers|May 15, 2014

Nothing bothers me more than uninformed people angrily spouting political beliefs. Don’t get me wrong, if you’re knowledgeable about the issues and you have different opinions that I do, I could listen to you talk all day. I enjoy a good debate as long as both sides can keep cool and remain respectful. One of the things that bothers me most is when someone says that legislation is being crammed down peoples’ throats. First of all, if you’re one of the people saying this, you’re being dramatic. Calm down. Whenever legislation is passed wi...

Potter-Dix turned out to be show stoppers at the District D-11 Championships at Morrill High School as they earned a first and second place in the team competitions on Wednesday. The girls won their competition by a fairly comfortable margin, outpointing Leyton 113-92. The boys were edged by Garden County 106.5 to 105. Perhaps more important for the athletes was the chance to qualify for the NSAA State Track and Field Championships at Burke Stadium in Omaha on May 23-24. For those from...

  • Six Warriors punch their tickets to Omaha

    Stephen McKay|May 15, 2014

If you want to know how exciting it is to qualify for state, just ask Leyton's Katy Ernest and Shaela Jenkins. Though she attended as a sophomore to support her teammates, Ernest had never before competed at Burke Stadium. Now a senior, she had just one more chance. Those tears she shed at the end of the shot put competition were tears of happiness. Ernest eclipsed her previous personal best at just the time it would do her the most good. She threw 33-08.50 to earn a silver medal and a ride to...
