The Sidney school bond was defeated again on Tuesday, this time by a margin of just 64 votes. The $16.95 million bond would have funded the construction of a new K-4 school to replace the three aging facilities that now house those grade levels, the oldest of which was built in 1929. The initial count after the polls closed on Tuesday was 953 votes against the bond and 889 in favor of the bond. “We knew it was going to be a pretty close election,” said Sidney schools superintendent Jay Ehler. Although Ehler and the school board were opt...
Nathan Pohl will be spending more than one year imprisoned for an attempted burglary followed by an escape from the Sidney police station earlier this year. The Sidney man was initially arrested in February when law enforcement found him trespassing at the golf course mower shed. Upon his arrest, police found several items inside his vehicle that were taken from the mower shed. Later on that very frigid day, Pohl escaped the police department through a side door. He was not wearing a coat or shoes. He was located when an employee at Points...
Wyatt Coleman was sentenced to two years of probation on Tuesday for stealing a pickup truck from a Sidney residence in December 2013. Coleman was reportedly driving the truck on Interstate 76 when he was pulled over and arrested. On April 2 Coleman pled no contest to one count of theft by unlawful taking, a class four felony. A new sign has been erected at the Grand Prairie Cemetery, located about two miles south of Sidney. Volunteers taking care of the location decided age and weather made replacing the sign a necessity. The present Grand Prairie Cemetery was associated with the Dunkard Church. The first burial was July 31, 1888 of Mrs. W. C. Teeter. The Dunkard Church moved to Sidney in 1890 and ceased to exist in October 1918. Almost all volunteers that care for the Grand Prairie Cemetery have some family... Full story
Another school year is drawing to a close. If you have young children, you might be planning for their summer activities. But you also might want to look even farther into the future — to the day when your kids say “goodbye” to their local schools and “hello” to their college dormitories. When that day arrives, will you be financially prepared to pay for the high costs of higher education? Consider this: For the 2013–2014 academic year, the average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) was $18,391 for an in-state student at a four-year public co...
Though Creek Valley had already learned they were the champions of the Sutherland Invite Tuesday, edging North Platte by two strokes, there was still one more score to settle. Fresh off the heels of his best round of the season at Kimball last week, Lane Godfrey attempted to win a second consecutive individual gold medal. But he and Anselmo Cano of Garden County would have to go overtime to settle the matter. Godfrey admittedly wasn't as sharp as he was in shooting a 73 at Kimball's Four Winds...
