After some negotiation, Sun Valley Rides made an agreement with the Cheyenne County Fair Board to participate in this year’s fair. The fair board announced last month that the carnival was not returning to the event this year. Board members were worried that without a carnival, it would have a hard time drawing visitors to the fair, which has been a concern in past years even with the carnival in action. The carnival company claimed that it previously backed out due to financial issues. Sun Valley Rides blamed horrible weather last summer, whic...

Our community should be right proud of our city manager’s testimony before a US Senatorial audience recently. It sort of put our city in the national limelight for a short time and certainly a lot of the credit accrues to our own Gary Person. I have known Gary since he first appeared on the scene as a reporter for the Scottsbluff Star Herald and have worked with him on many of his projects over the years. He has exemplified the traits that have identified those of vision and common sense which are more often seen in the midwest. We are f... Full story
I wish I had all the money I’ve spent over the years trying to control cheat grass on our farm. Cheat grass has been a problematic weed in winter wheat production for as long as anyone can remember. My grandfather and father were battling cheat grass when I was a young boy starting out farming. We were conventionally tilling our ground in a winter wheat/summer fallow cropping rotation. Dad would use a stubble mulch farming practice to maintain more residues on the soil surface. This would usually involve a couple of early season disking of t...
As Sidney's Logan Lewis posed for pictures with a large medallion around his neck following the Bayard BCD Invitational on Friday, it must have seemed a little like deja vu. In what was a fitting end to a remarkable day for the Sidney Red Raiders--both the boys and girls earned runaway victories--Logan Lewis was was awarded the Male Athlete of the Meet award. The boys took the title with 142 points to top runner-up Mitchell (112.5) by nearly 30 points. In the girls competition, Sidney (116...
Potter-Dix swept the team competition, in part thanks to Alexus Rozelle's record-setting performance in the throwing events. Leyton's Jessica Houk again outraced everyone in the sprints. Jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the Class 1A 2014 CHSAA State Baseball Championships at All-Star Park in Lakewood, Colorado Saturday, Peetz had plenty of reason to feel optimistic about moving on. But then the fourth inning happened. Powered by five runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Dove Creek Bulldogs turned back the local 'Dogs in a first-round game 9-7. Although he held Dove Creek hitless through two innings and scoreless through three, Bradey Holtz was removed during a shaky fourth. Cody...
