Sidney’s boundaries will likely soon expand. At Monday’s meeting, the city’s planning commission considered seven properties for annexation and recommended to the city council that six of these properties be incorporated into the city. There is still a lengthy process ahead before these properties actually become part of Sidney. Although some of these property owners requested annexation, many of them were considered because they already receive city utilities and other services. Gary Dible spoke on behalf 21st Century Equipment, the only...
The UNL Extension office hosted a farm safety day for Cheyenne County second graders at the Lodgepole Youth Camp on Thursday. Hundreds of young people learned from experts to handle everything from farm equipment to common items with care. Chris Harms proves that the safety helmet for an ATV is not tight enough to protect this young man's head.... Full story

We know so little of William Shakespeare’s life. We know that he was christened on April 26, 1564, and that his father, John Shakespeare, made gloves in Stratford and served as an alderman on the town council. We know that in November of 1582, when Will was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, then twenty-six; that six months later Anne gave birth to a daughter, Susannah; and that in February of 1585, Anne gave birth to a set of twins, Hamnet and Judith. We know that in 1592, Will was a noted L...
I’m not sure the good old days were really that good. Quite often I hear people around town talking about how much better things were back in the day. Kids were more respectful, teachers could paddle students to make them behave and no one had to deal with constant texting at dinner. I submit to you that Sidney was a much wilder place way back in the day than it is now, although I supposed citizens don’t really reminisce about the late 1800s. However, I’m sure this sort of thinking has gone on for centuries. We always idealize the past. Everyon...

For The Sun-Telegraph The Nebraska State College System (NSCS) recently awarded over 100 Board of Trustee Scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Nebraska. A Board of Trustee (BOT) Scholarship provides full tuition for recipients and is worth nearly $17,000 over four years. The NSCS also awarded the Governor’s Opportunity Award to three recipients, one each at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges, member institutions of the NSCS. The Governor’s Opportunity Award provides half of the college tuition costs and, like the BOT Sch... Full story
Chanda DeMasters can be found organizing many of the youth related activities around Cheyenne and Kimball Counties. If not directly responsible for them, the UNL Extension representative works alongside members of 4-H to help bring about successful projects, such as the fair or farm safety day. Although a Sidney resident for the past 16 years, you can still find traces of her Colorado upbringing--and her years in 4-H. 1. What drew you to this? The youth. I grew up in 4-H. I enjoy all the 4-H...
I’ve hesitated to bring up this topic lest the subject of it be put at risk because of these words. I’ve lived in big cities and small towns and just about everywhere is the unfortunate reality of homelessness. I didn’t think it was an issue in Sidney until I came across one so unfortunate being last summer. I felt bad for him and hoped that he could pull himself together before long. Or at least that he could find the help he needed. I saw him occasionally throughout the fall and winter. But sightings became increasingly rare as the tempe...
