In a welcome change from recent weeks, student athletes finally took center stage over the weather at the Best of the West Classic track meet in Scottsbluff on Tuesday. Though the high temperature of 43-degrees was about 20-degrees below normal and winds from the northwest were steady at 14 mph, the skies remained mostly sunny. “The cold weather was a problem for us, but it was the same problem for everyone,” said Sidney head coach John Ganser. “I’m just very pleased with how we compete...

Except for the Masters League, the APA uses a handicap and scoring system that allows all players to...
WASHINGTON (AP) — We’re in denial: Americans underestimate their chances of needing long-term care as they get older — and are taking few steps to get ready. A new poll examined how people 40 and over are preparing for this difficult and often pricey reality of aging, and found two-thirds say they’ve done little to no planning. In fact, 3 in 10 would rather not think about getting older at all. Only a quarter predict it’s very likely that they’ll need help getting around or caring for themselves during their senior years, according to the poll...
Editor, The President became quite upset when his gun control bill failed to garner enough votes in the Senate to pass even though he imported several of the parents of children who had been gunned down by the deranged shooter a short time ago. He stated that the Senators who failed to support his bill cared little for the children who were killed or might be in the future. However, he knows full well that nothing in this bill would have deterred the shooter or will do so in the future. He also knows that the amendment to the Constitution...
Editor, While I could take issue with many things in the “It’s Mines” opinion-editorial of the April 12, 2013 Sun-Telegraph, the issue that I most object to is the characterizations by the writer of those who have a different opinion than she on the issue raised. Those who oppose same-sex marriage based on their faith are called “cowards,” or referred to as ones who “hide behind God,” yet the most reprehensible is the suggestion that they are similar to the Ku Klux Klan in using their faith to “further their hate.” Christians who oppose homose...
Concern for the performance of American students in math and science, compared to the rest of the world, has become something of a national obsession over the past few decades. In a recent Program for International Student Assessment report, for example, American 15-year-olds finished 24th out of 29 countries in math literacy. Finland topped the list, followed by South Korea and Netherlands. The U.S. fared better in a 2011 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study test of 4th and 8th grade students, placing 6th of 57 in science....
Decisions. Paul Arden once said, “if you always make the right decision, the safe decision, the one most people make, you will be the same as everyone else.” I have always had a severe problem with decision-making, and I believe that indecisiveness is in fact a specialty of mine. Then I met my boyfriend – someone who also delves into the talent of indecisiveness. Learning to decide on things together has helped us grow as a couple, while at the same time it has also forced me to make decisions sometimes and learn that I can have a say in thing...

The Sunol School building, now the Sunol Community Center, is like a moment frozen in time. Pictures of past graduating seniors still cover the walls; books still line the library shelves; the trophies earned by athletes and students still sit proudly in display cases. The gymnasium, complete with a stage, is in great condition and waiting for people to attend events. But the building needs help. The plaster is falling from the ceilings on the upper floors as a reminder of the resulting leaks...
OLYMPIA, Wash. — In a quest to save money, political leaders in Washington state are exploring a proposal that would shift some government workers out of their current health plans and onto the insurance exchange developed under President Barack Obama’s health care law. Lawmakers believe the change, which could affect thousands of part-time state employees and education workers, would save the state $120 million over the next two years. It would consequently push more health care costs onto the federal government because many of the low-income...
The Nebraska legislature suspended debate on the Legislative Bill 407, regarding state funding for public schools. The potential effect of the LB 407 on schools in the Cheyenne County area varies, according to local administrators. Sidney Public Schools Superintendent Jay Ehler believes the bill will impact Sidney little, if at all. “The state aid formula is so complicated it is hard to keep track of how various bills will affect our school district,” he explained. “Based on the models for state...
Can landscaping help put Sidney on the map? At last night’s meeting of the City Council, the answer seemed to depend upon a dollar amount. Both Korey Stanley of Peeley Irrigation, and B.J. Raffelson of Raffelson Rock Co. presented their proposals for the South Entrance Project meeting. The project is planned for the corner of the intersection at 11th Avenue and Old Post Road. A gas station is in the process of being built adjacent to that land and Wamsley Development gifted the city a...
The City of Sidney is alerting residents of two solicitations going on in the community creating consumer concerns. One involves an illegal door to door solicitation and the other involves a mailing on water line repair insurance. The first involves the Choice Gas Program currently in effect until April 25 where a natural gas provider is soliciting consumers door to door. No company or individual has requested nor received a solicitation license from the City of Sidney. The solicitation is being done illegally. If you are approached, the City...
