A local animal rescue organization made a presentation during Monday’s Cheyenne County Commissioners meeting. Sybil Prosser, representing High Plains PAW Rescue, explained the mission of her organization. “We take all the dogs and cats brought in as strays or found,” she said. This week alone, the rescue is set to receive four dogs. Animals under the care of the organization are thoroughly checked out by a veterinarian, then moved to a foster home while awaiting adoption. Nebraska Extension Educator Natalia Bjorklund will conduct a training class in Scottsbluff in April for those interested in being part the Nebraska Bee Survey. The survey is intended to determine what bees live in Nebraska. More than 4,000 different types of bees live in North America. Robert "Bob" Matthes, 62 of Sidney, passed away at his home, Wed., April 1, 2015. Gary Wayne Tvrs, 75 of Dalton, passed from this earth on April 3, 2015 at his home in Dalton surrounded by the love of his family. Gary was born on July 29, 1939 in a little house on a hilltop at Hay Springs, Neb. He was the second son of James and Emma (Konapasek) Tvrs. Gary grew up on the family farm, knowing from a young age what it was to work for a living. There is a developing feed source for the cattle industry here in our region with the introduction of field peas as an alternative feed source for the livestock industry. The production of field peas across our region has come about as producers look for alternative crops to transition back to winter wheat in their crop rotations. Amir Haghverdi will join the faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research and Extension Center this summer as an irrigation and water-management specialist. Haghverdi's appointment was announced by Jack Whittier, research and extension director at the Panhandle R&E Center. Tyler Wintholz of Sidney High School led a group of nine local high school basketball players who were voted onto the 2015 Nebraska Associated Press boys' basketball teams. Two area players were named to the 2015 Nebraska Associated Press All-State girls basketball teams earlier this week as voted on by sports writers and sportscasters from around the state. In Class B, senior Savanna Rosenbaum of Sidney High School earned the honor while Potter-Dix freshman Audrey Juelfs was named to the Class D1 squad.
