    Caitlin Sievers|Mar 21, 2014

Jason Custer will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Custer was sentenced to life in prison without parole Thursday for fatally shooting Adam McCormick in the front yard of a Sidney home nearly a year and a half ago. In the state of Nebraska, life in prison is mandated for first degree murder convictions. Additionally, Custer received a sentence of 20-50 years in prison for use of a firearm to commit a felony and 10-20 years imprisonment for possession of a firearm by a felon. Custer was ordered to serve time for both of these additional...

  • Across the Fence: John Colter, the first mountain man

    M. Timothy Nolting|Mar 21, 2014

In the early 1930s, Idaho farmer William Beard was clearing a field in Tetonia, Idaho, just west of the Teton Mountain Range. While working the field William unearthed a rock of rhyolite lava in the shape of the profile of a man's head. The stone, 13 inches long, 8 inches wide and about 4 inches thick, is carved with the name "John Colter" on one side and the date "1808" on the other. It is possible that the Colter Stone may well be a piece of rock graffiti carved by John Colter himself....

  • Letting go

Pastor David Hall, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church - Sidney|Mar 21, 2014

A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and he was made clean. Mark 1: 40-42 Two things present themselves in this passage. First, the leper approaches Jesus which is something unusual for that day. Lepers were expected to stay clear of others and to announce themselves from a distance. Second, the text says that Jesus reached out and touched the leper. Jesus isn’t afraid even though most people would have been afrai...

    Stephen McKay|Mar 21, 2014

As mostly clear skies and a warm sun greeted the first day of spring it was the perfect setting for the Peetz Bulldogs and Merino Rams to welcome the season with the schedule's first baseball game. Unfortunately for the visiting 'Dogs the fifth inning got away from the young squad. The Rams went on to win a 12-3 non-league contest on Thursday. Before the game unravelled in the fifth, Peetz pitcher Bradey Holtz was sailing along with a 3-2 lead. He threw mostly fastballs, mixing in a diet of...

  • Rough me up

Jeff Parsons, columnist Baseball by the Book|Mar 21, 2014

One of the most overlooked rules in the book is the treatment of the baseball itself. Why? you ask. First, a little background. The American baseball is made with a small squishy ball center wrapped in lots of thread. Nine inches of leather is then hand sewn using 216 single stitches to cover the ball, bringing it to its legal size and weight of 9 inches around and 5 ounces in weight. Different sizes are made depending on the country and the level of play. Each baseball has a waxy type coating on the leather to make it look nice and to...
