LINCOLN, Neb. – The large overhead scoreboard in Pinnacle Bank Arena read: Elkhorn South 52, Sidney 47. That was with a minute and 18 seconds left, precisely when the Storm's Johnny Trueblood strolled to the free-throw line. He calmly sank his first shot. After receiving the ball from the referee and a couple of dribbles later, he made the second one as well to put Elkorn South up by seven points. I could feel the lump in my throat and a little moisture briefly well up in my eyes. The dream o...
LINCOLN, Neb. – Through the inevitable pain that follows the loss of a championship game, a broader picture of what was accomplished slowly emerges – especially when measured against what was expected. Despite falling 60-51 to Elkhorn South (21-5) in the finals of the 2015 NSAA Class B Boys' Basketball Championships Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena, third-seeded Sidney (22-5) had its remarkable season come to an end at a time and place no one seriously contemplated three or four mon...
As the Sidney High Red Raiders battled 350 miles away in Lincoln on Saturday, local fans turned out at local watering holes to watch the game live on TV. At least 100 people stopped in at Hillside Bar and Grill to view the game with fellow Raider supporters. Judy Morrison, manager at Hillside, said she was surprised by the turnout. “We filled up quickly,” she said. “There are a lot of supporters for Sidney.” Expecting at the least a busier than normal Saturday, she had called in three additional...
The Cheyenne County Board of Commissioners discussed the county’s aging fairground buildings on Monday morning at its regular meeting. While the commissioners conceded any upgrades or new construction likely won’t be completed in time for this year’s fair, they identified improving the facility as a priority. “We really need to focus on fixing up the buildings for the kids and for the community,” Commissioner Philip Sanders said Marty McMillen is leading a committee on the proposed new building at the fairgrounds, and he presented possible...

Field pea planting is just around the corner so I thought I would share with you my ideas on raising field peas. We’ve been growing field peas on our farm for several years now and I know there are a lot of first time growers or fairly new growers in the area. I might be able to shorten the learning curve for the newer growers by sharing what we have learned over the years we’ve grown field peas. The first step to growing a successful field pea crop is to buy certified seed. The purchase of seed is the most expensive part of raising field peas,...
Spring is just around the corner and it’s time to consider planting the garden. Most of us already know what we want to plant. But there are a number of items you should consider before selecting cultivars for direct seeding, growing your own transplants, or purchasing transplants from your local garden center. The first consideration is the variety choice: either a proven variety for the area or an “All-American” cultivar that has been grown and tested across the United States. They are generally widely adapted and will provide a quali...

The Peetz High Bulldogs made it to the Colorado Class 1A state basketball tournament this season for the first time since 2008. Despite losing games against Sangre de Cristo and Ouray, the Bulldogs exceeded expectations and represented their team and school with pride. Under the leadership of first-year head coach Jim Gardiner, Peetz was 15-11 on the season. After Friday's 65-62 loss to Ouray, Gardiner reflected on the season and his players. "They can't fault themselves one iota," he said. The...
LINCOLN, Neb. – While the 2015 version of the Sidney Red Raiders boys' basketball players made it to the Class B NSAA state tournament, they just may have benefitted from some positive karma coming from the stands at Pinnacle Bank Arena. In attendance for the Raiders run at a state championship was a group of men who knew just what the present-day Sidney players were going through. Four members of the 1981 Sidney Red Raiders state championship team were in Lincoln to be honored by the NSAA at h...
LINCOLN, Neb. – Erik Kohl will be the first to tell you that a team is only as good as its senior leadership. In fact, he lauded his two soon-to-be-graduating players immediately after Sidney's loss in Saturday's Class B state basketball championship game. "Lane Harvey was our floor general all year, and Jared Ross made it through some serious adversity to be playing here at the end of the season," Kohl said. "We're really going to miss those guys." In Harvey, Kohl had a four-year starter at p...
LINCOLN, Neb. – Perhaps the most often repeated sentiment offered by the Sidney boys' and girls' basketball players after each game, is how appreciative they are of the support they get from the fans. Of course, the most vocal section of fans at the Cabela's Athletic Facility comes from the student section affectionately known as the "Red Zone." Though loud enough to cause significant needle movement on a decibel meter, the Red Zone prides itself not just on being boisterous, but being classy a...
