  • In defense of speech you hate

    Susan Estritch, Syndicated Columnist|Mar 15, 2013

Michael Vick was all set to do a book tour to promote himself as a new and improved role model when things got ugly. “Despite warnings of planned protests, Vick had hoped to continue with the appearances as planned, bringing his story of redemption and second chance to major markets,” his publisher, aptly named Worthy Publishing, said in a statement. “However, once the reported protests escalated into threats of violence against the retailers, Worthy Publishing, Vick and his family decided to cancel the events.” In case you’ve managed to miss t...

  • 'The Dow' versus 'The Doug'

    Jim Hightower, Syndicated Columnist|Mar 15, 2013

“It’s a sign,” exclaims a February Associated Press story — a sign that our economy is “healing.” “It signals that things are getting back to normal,” added a delighted market analyst. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the holy measure of corporate stock prices, and it is now smiling w...

  • What is a registered dietitian?

Ashley Houtwed, Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Mar 15, 2013

This past Wednesday, March 13 was National Registered Dietitian (RD) Day. It’s the day that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reminds everyone that the best source of practical, affordable and accurate nutrition information is a registered dietitian. Registered Dietitians are food and nutrition experts who translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. Cabela’s employees did their first fish stock of the year Thursday. A truck driven by Brian Hahle, owner of the Pleasant Valley Fish Farm in McCook, Neb., was pulled up next to the pond at Legion Park where Hahle would make his delivery. The truck contained a tank full of approximately 425 trout. The trout range in size and weight from two-thirds of a pound to five pounds – giving fishermen the chance to catch a tiny fish or a whopper. The trout were transferred from the tank into the pond net...

  • Politician's rise highlights NYC parade dispute

    Associated Press|Mar 15, 2013

NEW YORK — She’s a leading candidate to be New York’s next mayor. She’s already one of its top Irish-American officials. Christine Quinn is also a lesbian and proud of it. And that’s why the City Council speaker won’t be marching in Saturday’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, an event so entrenched in New York tradition that it’s older than the United States. Quinn’s rising political prominence is bringing a decades-long dispute between parade organizers and gay activists back into sharp relief. And it’s raising the prospect of an unprecedented stan...

  • UN nips Boilers in tourney opener

    Mar 15, 2013

CHICAGO (AP) — Shavon Shields wasn’t about to brush this one off, to dismiss it as simply one small step for a program trying to make a big leap. The way he sees it, this could be a start for Nebraska. Shields scored 19 points, Brandon Ubel added 16 points and eight rebounds and Nebraska beat Purdue 57-55 Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. “Just build off this and keep going,” Shields said. “The only way we can go is up.” The Cornhuskers (15-17) just completed their second season in the Big Ten, and after falling to...
