Sales tax collections from the new half percent tax that Sidney voters approved in July 2013 are coming in at a rate that seems higher than expected. Although the city predicted that yearly revenue over the 10 years that the sales tax will be collected would average $1 million per year, the city thought the tax would bring in a lower amount for first few years. Sidney High School senior Lucas Rosenbaum has committed to Missouri S & T University in Rolla, Mo., where he plans to compete with the track and field team and study engineering. Rosenbaum, a straight-A student and four-sport athlete, will join the Miners primarily as a pole vaulter. He presently shares the Red Raiders record in the event with a vault of 14-1. Sidney graduate Kaitlyn Wells, junior at University of Nebraska-Kearney, broke the meet record at the Concordia Indoor Invitational on Feb. 14 in the 800 meter run, setting a new mark of 2.18:58. She is also a member of the 4 X 400 relay team which broke the meet record with 3.55:64. On March 2 at the MIAA Conference Championships in Joplin, Mo., the 4x4 relay team placed second with a time of 3:53:31.
