LAS VEGAS (AP) — A furious Denny Hamlin said he won’t pay the $25,000 fine leveled on him by NASCAR on Thursday after his criticism of the Gen-6 race car. The fine also left many of his fellow drivers wondering what they can say about their new cars without incurring NASCAR’s wrath. He compared the new race car unfavorably to last year’s car, along with lamenting the overall quali...

  • Forest Service may let more fires burn

    Associated Press|Mar 8, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After coming in $400 million over budget following last year’s busy fire season, the Forest Service is altering its approach and may let more fires burn instead of attacking every one. The move, quietly made in a letter late last month by Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell, brings the agency more in line with the National Parks Service and back to what it had done until last year. It also answers critics who said the agency wasted money and endangered firefighters by bat...

    Associated Press|Mar 8, 2013

DENVER (AP) — The judge in the deadly Colorado theater shootings has denied a request by defense lawyers to declare a state law on the insanity plea unconstitutional. In a ruling released Friday, state District Judge William Sylvester granted one defense request, for a written explanation of the consequences of pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. The ruling appears to clear the way for suspect James Holmes to enter a plea as scheduled on Tuesday. His lawyers had said they could not responsibly advise Holmes how to plead because of q...

  • Voters dribble in ...

    Susan Estritch, Syndicated Columnist|Mar 8, 2013

As I write this, it is Election Day in the nation’s second largest city. Ho hum. Worry not. It’s not as if it were the Oscars or the Golden Globes, or even the Writers Guild Award (the punch line of every joke about dumb blondes in this town is that they made the mistake of sleeping with the writer). Believe me, there are no traffic jams. Nothing has been preempted. No, this is just an election for Los Angeles mayor, school board, city council and a decision about whether to raise the sales tax to 9.5 percent. Just that. And no one is pay...

  • It's Mines

Tina Mines, Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Mar 8, 2013

“He who knows others is wise; He who knows himself is enlightened” ~ Loa Tzu. It is an interesting thing to understand and truly know who you are, but many people go their whole life not really knowing who they are. I say this because despite people saying the words, ‘you can only find happiness in yourself and not in someone else,’ the actual practice of this is hardly ever there – even in the speaker of these words. I would venture to say that is where the saying of practicing what one preaches comes into play. When I was first diagnosed...

  • Why is eating healthy so hard?

    Ashley Houtwed, Nebraska News Service|Mar 8, 2013

The simple answer to the question, Why is eating healthy SO hard?, is… IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE! So many of us tend to think that if we want to eat healthy that it will be too expensive, take too long to make the meals, has to be food you have never heard of, or food that is not readily available to you. These thoughts can be true if you make them true, but all you have to do is change your way of thinking and develop a meal plan that will work for you! Some say, “I don’t like healthy foods and I can’t find them.” Why try to make a menu or pla...

Farmers received no relief from a new Farm Bill in 2012, but one senator from Nebraska has introduced a bipartisan regulatory relief for Nebraska farmers that could save producers up to $3.4 billion. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) announced that she has introduced the Farmer’s Undertake Environmental Land Steward (FUELS Act) that would modify the rules set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The current Oil Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) rule applies to any facility that has a fuel storage capacity of more than 1...
