An unprecedented number of street projects are planned for Sidney in the next year. Hank Radtke of the street department presented his one year and six year plans for projects to the city council last week. Street improvements for 2014 include work on 10th Ave. between Illinois and the BNSF tracks. This portion of the street will be completely rebuilt, from substructure to surfacing. Cabela’s expects to begin construction on The Ranch, its local housing development as well as a headquarters expansion this year. At the same time, the corporation also plans to expand its retail presence nationwide. Last week Cabela’s announced plans to build three new stores. Cabela’s expects to open a store in Ammon, Idaho in spring 2015. This 42,000 square foot store is the company’s third in the state and will serve the Idaho Falls area. At last week’s meeting the city council gave final approval for modification of city codes to accommodate The Ranch, the new Cabela’s housing subdivision. These included an ordinance to allow the council to enlarge or increase the front setback requirements on residential properties by accepting a plat. This will give the council more flexibility in the future when considering different types of housing, without having to amend the code. In the town he once called home, Sidney senior basketball player Paxton Ehler broke the Red Raiders’ career scoring record. The moment occurred during a game on Feb 7 at Gering. Ehler broke the record previously held by Paul Hamilton, who scored 848 points between 2004-2007. Depite the historic mark, Ehler was unaware of his accomplishment at the time. Sidney High School senior Tucker Wintholz has been selected to the 56th Shrine Bowl of Nebraska it was announced recently. The Shrine game is scheduled for June 7, at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field in Kearney. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m while the Shrine Bowl Parade will take place at 10 a.m. in Kearney. “I’m really excited and feel very honored to be chosen for the Shrine team,” said Wintholz. The Red Raiders earned the top seed in the upcoming Class B District 6 basketball tournament it was announced Tuesday morning. As the No. 1 seed Sidney will play the winner of the play-in game from Feb. 25. The Raiders will face either No. 4 Alliance (4-15) or No. 5 Scottsbluff (2-17) on Thu. Cheyenne County Community Center and Sports Director Tracy Pelster presented the 10,000 Shot Club Awards on Saturday, Feb. 15 during halftime of the Sidney JV Girls basketball game. The 10,000 Shot Club is a program designed for all ages and grades and it runs for 11 weeks, in the months of June – August. The Sidney Jaycees will present a Super Shooters competition at the Cheyenne County Community Center on Sunday at 2 p.m. Super Shooters, which is being sponsored by Miller Office Products, is an individual timed basketball competition. Boys and girls ages 6-13 compete together in four different age groups. Competitors are given 60 seconds to shoot from five different spots on the court. Sidney native and Peetz High School graduate Jacob Wilson has made his mark on the Black Hills State University (Spearfish, S.D.) track team. Since Wilson won the high jump at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meet last spring he has not lost an event. He won the championship last spring with a with a school record leap of 6-10 1/4 in an outdoor event.
