  • Raiders win wild one over Scottsbluff

    Dave Faries|Feb 10, 2014

Time slowed agonizingly between the moment Scottsbluff guard Dillon Hernandez pushed off toward the rim and the first hum of the final buzzer. Paxton Ehler erased that second from his mind. "I saw him go up," the Raiders senior recalled, "then I was helping him off the floor." To Tyler Wintholz, that instant brought to mind another buzzer-beating effort. "I was thinking 'not Gering again,'" he said. On Friday night, Gering's Jose Palomo burst Sidney's hopes for a road win by sinking a last...

  • Sidney eases past struggling Bearcats

    Stephen McKay|Feb 10, 2014

Sidney made it a clean sweep, with two road wins over district opponents this weekend. After knocking off Scottsbluff for the third time this season in a 54-44 win on Saturday, the Raiders now have a season mark of 13-6. The struggling Bearcats, who ended a 12-game losing streak the night before, slipped to 2-14. Sarah Mahr backed up her record setting performance at Gering the night before to score 22 points. Cody Rowley added 9, Savanna Rosenbaum 8 and Katelin Cole 7. Sidney entered the game...

    Stephen McKay|Feb 10, 2014

For the Red Raiders this season has been several times marked by record breaking performances. Friday night's contest at Gering was another such night. Aided by a Sarah Mahr's school-record 30 points, Sidney turned aside the Gering Bulldogs 52-45 on the road in an important Class B6 matchup. Before the contest the Bulldogs were perched one spot above the Raiders on the NSAA points list in 12th. As a result of the weekend games, Sidney captured the 12th spot while Gering slipped back to 14th....

  • Buzzer beater hands Sidney tough road loss

    Stephen McKay|Feb 10, 2014

There are times in any sport when you just have to tip your hat to a great performance. After Logan Lewis converted on Paxton Ehler’s feed for a clutch bucket and a 1-point Sidney lead with about 16 seconds to go, it looked as though the Raiders were poised to steal a victory in Gering’s own building. But the Bulldogs’ Joses Palomo had other ideas. The Raiders ultimately finished on the wrong side of a 71-69 score between two of Class B’s top teams. After the Lewis score, the few seconds that remained must have seemed like an eternity to the...

  • Raiders edge Gering to close out regular season

    Dave Faries|Feb 10, 2014

The Raiders seventh dual win of the year, a 40-36 thriller over visiting Gering, might have seemed improbable at the start. Sidney conceded 12 points to the Bulldogs right off the bat, forfeiting points in the 120 and 126 weight classes, retrieving a handful only when the visitors left 285 open. And they were down in team points 12-8 early on, despite wins by Zach Borges and Michael Muggli. The turning point came when Ryan Nieto battled Gering's Quentin Timblin to a draw after three periods,...
