  • Ada Johnson turns 104 in Sidney

    Courtney Fletcher|Feb 9, 2015

Sidney resident Ada Johnson celebrated her 104th birthday on Sunday. She was born and raised in Cheyenne County on a ranch about 25 miles south of Sidney with her parents and three older sisters. "I had a delightful childhood. We had to be creative and think of our own games, we didn't have all this stuff to buy like kids do now. It's funny because my three older sisters all aspired to be teachers when we were kids and that's why one of our main games was always school and I had to be the...

  • New elementary school needs to happen – now

Rob Langrell, Publisher of the Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Feb 9, 2015

Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots on just one question. But it’s a big decision that’ll impact the Sidney community for decades to come. The time is now to vote “yes” for the bond that’ll create the funds for a new elementary school to house students in kindergarten through 4th grade. The need to provide a school with the space, technology and amenities for our youngsters to receive a 21st Century education is too overwhelming to ignore. The new school – to be situated on donated land on the east side of town – w...

One of the pleasures of traveling to the various winter conference meetings and summer field days I attend is getting introduced to some real innovative producers and researchers who strive to really make a difference in modern production agriculture. Last week, I visited about our tour to Dakota Lakes Research Farm near Pierre, S.D., and the Burleigh County Soil Conservation District, in Bismarck, N.D. Dwayne Beck, farm manager for Dakota Lakes, and Jay Furher, head of the Burleigh County Soil Conservation District, are two of the innovative...

  • Sidney boys stumble at Scottsbluff

    Rob Langrell|Feb 9, 2015

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – Like a good heavyweight fight, it took a little while for the Sidney and Scottsbluff boys' basketball teams to get a feel for each other on Saturday night. After trading punches in a sloppy opening eight minutes, the Bearcats' Dru Kuxhausen landed a few knockout punches that Sidney ultimately couldn't recover from. Scottsbluff posted a 70-56 victory in front of a loud and packed home gym, snapping the Red Raiders' 12-game winning streak. Sidney slipped to 17-3 this season – w...

  • Red Raiders survive battle with Gering, 54-42

    Stephen McKay|Feb 9, 2015

While the Sidney High boys' team took advantage of a technical foul call late in the game at Gering on Jan. 9 to eek out a two-point victory, the Red Raiders gave themselves more room for error the second time around. Though Gering made it interesting in the third quarter, the Raiders pulled away in the fourth to earn a 54-42 win over the Bulldogs at the Cabela's Athletic Facility on Friday night in a Class B District-6 matchup. The win marked the Raiders 12th straight – a school record. After t...

  • Lady Raiders post pair of wins

    Stephen McKay|Feb 9, 2015

While Scottsbluff put a stop to Sidney's five-game winning streak back on Jan. 23, the Lady Raiders responded with the perfect solution – start another five-game winning streak. Rather than being the terminus of an unbeaten streak, the Lady Bearcats (6-9, 6-1) were this time around the continuation of one. The Raiders (14-6, 5-1) earned their fifth consecutive win by avenging their only district loss of the season with a 47-27 win over Scottsbluff at the Cabela's Athletic Facility Saturday n...

  • Sidney girls shrug off slow start, down Gering

    Stephen McKay|Feb 9, 2015

If there was any doubt that a pair of late first-half field goals by Sidney Lady Raiders' Annalise Lecher and Emily Mahr on Friday night were the enough to put the locals ahead for good, Maddie Stafford made sure when the second half opened. Powered by an 18-4 run that spanned two halves, the Raiders went on to post a 37-27 win over district rival Gering at the Cabela's Athletic Facility to earn their fourth consecutive victory. The win advanced the Raiders record to 13-6 on the eve of their...

While the Bulldogs were competitive throughout much of the game against the Briggsdale Lady Falcons at Carlile Gymnasium, a cold third quarter put them in a hole they couldn’t climb out of. • UNDEFEATED

    For The Sun-Telegraph|Feb 9, 2015

Considering they went undefeated in duals this season, perhaps it was fitting that the Sidney Red Raiders' wrestlers finished their regular-season schedule with a dominating dual performance over district rival Gering Friday night. While battling the Bulldogs on their home mat, Sidney outpointed Gering 61-18 to finish the 2014-15 season a perfect 11-0 in one-on-one team matches. On their way to victory, the Raiders won four matches by forfeit and came out on top in six of the nine contested...
