  • The March for Life

    Deb Fischer, U.S. Senator|Jan 26, 2022

In August 2020, our nation marked the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, which gave women the right to vote. This was the final victory in a decades-long struggle by these visionary reformers. The women’s suffrage movement succeeded partly because it appealed to a promise our Founding Fathers made at the birth of our nation, but which remained unfulfilled until the 19th Amendment’s ratification: that all men – and women – are created equal. Today, a different group of...

  • Tourism Director Retires

    Forrest Hershberger, Publisher, Sun-Telegraph|Jan 26, 2022

In June 2018, Kevin Howard was hired as the new tourism director for Cheyenne County. He came with the presence of a man who sits down with a stranger and a cup of coffee and later get back on the road as friends. In exchange, that random driver with a curiosity prompted by the welcome sign may stop at other locations in the county, or on his next trip through. In the Jan. 18 Cheyenne County Commissioners meeting, Howard announced he is reaching the point where he is more interested in fishing...

  • Cheyenne County's Best Spellers

    Jan 26, 2022

It took about eight rounds to decide among the stage full of Cheyenne County spelling contestants. As with a sporting contest, the decision was often made by who was mentally more focused, and what word they drew at that round. Dagen Lee and Elizabeth Higgins proved to be the best spellers in Cheyenne County. The county competition was held Jan. 18 at West Elementary School. Higgins has the opportunity to compete at the State level in Omaha. Dagen Lee, right, is the runner-up in the county...

  • PlainsWest CASA Introduces Parenting Classes

    Forrest Hershberger, Publisher, Sun-Telegraph|Jan 26, 2022

It is often said parenting is one of the hardest jobs you'll love. The love is for the child or children you are raising. The difficulty is the next cliché: parenting is one job that comes with no job description. When should you the parent be stern and when should you be gentle? Should you let your child freely explore life, or set boundaries? How do you set results for wrong decisions? These are some of the questions parents are faced with when raising children, and among the topics to be...

  • Why Now?

    Dan Carlson, Prairie Ponderings|Jan 26, 2022

I’ve been blessed. I’ve been sure to let God know that. Though far from rich by the world’s standards, I’ve got a beautiful wife, a nice house, a vehicle that runs, food, clothing, clean water, and a lifestyle that’s comfortable. I’ve got friends, something of a “following” in the area, access to medical care and the benefit of living in a rural area not plagued with the problems afflicting the big cities. If you can relate to any of this, you’re blessed too. Many times over the years I’ve go...

  • Players vs The Game

Forrest Hershberger, View from the Handlebars|Jan 26, 2022

The days of Andy Griffith and Mayberry RFD are gone. They are not a memory, except with previous generations. Even the scripts once seen as a distant dream are viewed humorously. Don Knotts has gone on to the next life. Andy Griffith and the gang have moved on. What’s left now decades later is a mentality even the writers of the show probably couldn’t have imagined. I was in a discussion recently when I was reminded we, this part of the country, is in a squeeze play. The West and East Coast pop...

  • Energy Crisis '74

Mr. President, have you any statements? “Leave me alone. Just leave me alone.” Mr. President, what really caused the energy crisis?” “Smokin’ in the boy’s room.” During the crisis, how much gas will motorists be allowed? “Just enough for the city.” Who d...

  • Does Your Business Have An Exit Strategy?

    Jan 26, 2022

If you’re a business owner, you’ve got so much to think about, and you work so hard, that it might be difficult to envision the day when you’re in a different place in life. However, that day will likely arrive, so you’ll want to be prepared for it, which means you’ll need an exit strategy. But how do you create one? Here are some steps that can prove helpful: • Start planning early. Making a quick exit is probably not a viable strategy for most business owners. Instead, you’ll want to plan far ahead for when you want to leave your business...

  • Grain Entrapment: Don't Risk It

    Jan 26, 2022

Every time a farmer sidesteps grain-bin entry safety guidelines, they’re rehearsing for a tragedy. With the size of modern bins, the risk of grain entrapment, the leading cause of grain bin related fatalities, has increased over the past 10 years. Identifying grain handling safety principles is one of the aims of Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH). This University of Nebraska Medical Center group (https://www.unmc.edu/publichealth/feedyard/) is conducting two rese...

  • Lady Raiders One-and-One Over Week

    Mike Motz, Sports Writer|Jan 26, 2022

Sidney's Lady Raider Basketball team had two games over the week, and came away with one win and one loss. However, they had another loss which will affect the team for the rest of the season when senior and leading scorer Alecca Campbell was diagnosed with a torn ACL, ending her senior campaign early. However, Sidney Head Coach Tyler Shaw has been in this position before, and with a talented and well-coached bench to draw from, should find a way to replace Campbell's production with...

The Swedes came into Friday's match against Sidney at 6-and-8, but have a talented team with great length and rebounding ability, and matched up well against the Raiders. Sidney was able to stay with the Swedes in the first period, ending the quarter down 13-to-7, but then turned up the defensive pressure and ended the first half...

Potter-Dix's Coyote Boy's Basketball team entered the MAC Tournament as the number one seed and played like it, easily dispatching Banner County in the first round of the tournament then having little trouble with Garden County in the semi-finals, then winning a thriller against Bayard in the finals. The action started Monday January 17 when the Coyotes matched up with number 8 seed Banner County, and the winless Wildcats had no answer for the explosive Potter-Dix offense, going down 27-to-4 at...

    Mike Motz, Sports Writer|Jan 26, 2022

Peetz had a strong second half, putting up 11 points in the third quarter and 14 points in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit, and fell by a score of 40-to-36. • Putting An End to Human Trafficking in Nebraska

    Pete Ricketts, Nebraska Governor|Jan 26, 2022

The most heinous crimes often target vulnerable members of our society. To protect our innocent, Nebraska is hard at work to expose human trafficking and root it out of the Good Life. Human trafficking is a despicable crime. It inflicts severe trauma on its victims and shows a sickening disregard for human dignity. It’s important that we recognize that human trafficking exists in Nebraska. It may not be visible in your neighborhood, but it happens across the state and is a scourge in our s...

  • Discrimination Against White People

    David Bryan, Guest Columnist|Jan 26, 2022
    2

Did you know that if you are a white person that you are currently being discriminated against and punished for what other white people did in the past? The current powers that be and the world health organizations are putting white people on the bottom of the list for federal benefits and medical care simply on the basis of their color; regardless of their health conditions and American citizenship. Non-whites and illegal immigrants are getting benefits and medical assistance before and often...

  • Bait and Switch

Adrian Smith, House of Representatives, Nebraska 3rd District|Jan 26, 2022

One year ago this week, I attended the inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris. While I was deeply disappointed in the election process and its outcome, President Biden campaigned as a centrist who wanted to unite our country, defeat COVID, and improve America’s standing in the world. When he took office, I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Instead, President Biden and his administration immediately began implementing a left-wing agenda out of touch with s...

  • Straight Talk From Steve: LR14

    Steve Erdman, 47th District|Jan 26, 2022

Ever since being elected to the State Legislature back in 2016, I have received more emails in support of an Article V convention of the states than on any other single issue by a long shot. The emails I receive in support of a convention of the states out-number those in opposition to it by a margin of about twenty to one. So, there is no question that voters in the Panhandle of Nebraska support LR 14, the resolution which calls for a convention of the states. Once LR 14 passes in the...
