  • Fire at Sidney landfill extinguished without incident

    A fire that broke out at the Sidney landfill on Monday afternoon was quickly extinguished without injury or damage to equipment. "The only thing we can think of is we got some hot ashes," Sidney Solid Waste Superintendent Rob Campbell said. The fire broke out in a bale pit, he said. "We were able to dig through it, and with the dozer and equipment, get down to it and pull it out," Campbell explained, "and then the fire department sprayed some water on it."     Joanne Hunt, 86, passed away peacefully in Loveland, Colo., on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016. She was born and raised in Dakota City. Joanne began working part-time as a nurses' aid in a hospital in Sioux City, Iowa (close to Dakota City) at 13 years old during World War II and spent the rest of her working life as a nurse. She attended Wayne State Teachers College, University of Nebraska and graduated from the Kahler School of Nursing, Rochester, Minn. in 1950. Joanne married Darrell Hunt in June... Full story

    Helen Milburn, 94 of Pueblo West, Colo., formerly of Chappell, prior to the Legacy Commons, passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at Legacy Commons Assisted Living in Pueblo West, Colo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at St. Edward Catholic Church in St. Edward, with Msgr. Ralph Steffensmeier officiating.
